What are some of your favorite companies, grinds and size, and why?
I am a big fan of hollow ground Japanese razors, started adding more to collection. I would say 6/8 my favorite but 7/8 and 5/8 are welcomed.
I really want a Hayashi diamond but haven't got one of those yet.
Other good companies are
Tanifuji, Orion, Daishi, Nichiri, and a bunch of others
Difficult to pick a favorite.
Have several. All are excellent razors.
As far as grind and size mine are all full to extra full hollow. And right around 13/16th’s.
Gold Rex, Hayashi, Nobiru Nicon, Towa.
Wouldn’t hesitate to get any other makes if the condition/ price was right.
Ask yourself this question.
“Have I ever read a reputable post about a bad vintage Japanese manufactured razor?”
I have not.
I also have many American, German made razors that are also very good.
Right know my Korrat 14 is getting a lot of use. Last week I ran through my Japanese razors and posted some in SOTD.
My $.02. Ken
Thanks Christian and Ken!! I currently have a Hoken 66 and will have a kikuboshi with a barbers notch on the way. Both over 6/8. In my collection,ATM, my favorites are the full hollow Henckel 72,72 1/2, My T.I., Dovo best and my Hoken66( soon to be my favorite as well kikuboshi)
I have a few with different grinds full hollow to quarter hollow, one of the things I find that's pretty much a universal standard with Japanese straights is the size, they tend to mostly be not all but nearly all of them are 13/16 they love that number, regarding grind my favourite are quarter hollow Hoshitombo having said that they are all great shavers.
I have one. ABCo. 13/16 full hollow. I f8nd it to be a great shaver. I do enjoy it and would like to get a few more Japanese razors but they seem to go for a high price. Its not a wonder why with the history they have in making blades. Full hollow, nice width and no stabilizers is what i love in the shape of a blade.
Here's some eye candy for the Hayashi folks - NOS Hayashi 8000 covered tang, sitting on the stone that honed it.
Cheers, Steve
Yes. Love the look of that rock!
Great thread. I've been researching Japanese straights myself. Looking to make my next purchase Japanese.
Thanks to the OP.
Jer
Steve that's is a SWEET pic.
Check the B/S/T really quick, Jer! ;)
Sorry to hear that, Jer, but it wasn't meant to be. I'm sure something will pop up when you're ready with JRAD funds. :)
I have acquired a Kikuboshi "Extra Hollow Ground" with thumb-notch, a Nichiri Co. Yaichi frameback, and most recently a mint Manaslu 300. All are 13/16 shoulderless (Kiku is single) with half-hollow grinds. The steel quality, size and grind of these razors hits the sweet spot for me, that's for sure.
I have three a Kikuboshi 2002, Hoshitombo 6500, and just picked up a Hayashi Diamond 1072. All three are are sweeeet shavers! They take a very fine edge for sure.
I love Saito SK1 smiling blade ! Really Salvador Dali look to them ! My question is this. Is there a particular technique to stropping and honing compared with a straight blade ??
Rolling x strokes for smiling blades. Here is video of guy honing one on small coticule I think

Christian - cheers for this buddy ! Got a saito on my wish list but can’t get my head around honing stropping such an exaggerated curved edge !
