Can anyone help identify this razor? 5/8, somewhere around 1/2 hollow, dark tortoiseshell celluloid scales. I'm wondering if it is Soviet/Russian, the internet search I can manage from the word fragments hasn't turned up anything.

Yes, looks to be Russian and made in Moscow. Probably by Stiz.
Yeah, I concur - typical Soviet production.
The first line appears to be the abbreviation of the factory that made it, and the second line is Moscow in russian.
40 is just 40 (not as in 'beer') :)
Great, thanks a lot. Are Stiz decent razors? I will of course be honing it and trying it whatever...
Edit: A quick search of this site tells me that they can be very good razors, so it could be well worth it.

Ive never made it to Germany. Maybe they dont have 40's there? Ive never drank one myself. It just got to warm on me. But, back to the Russian blade. Ive been wanting to get one in my collection, but they all seem to be a bit small. 5/8 round point.

In USA there is something that is sold as beer and comes in 40oz=1182ml bottles :)
It has very little to do with what is sold as beer in Germany!
Jerry, you should make it to Germany someday, if you can, and I think you would very much like the beers over there!
I don't know if I've ever seen larger soviet blade (I mean not current or custom but the standard mass produced stuff from the past).
With all the legendary problems in the Soviet Union we ought to remember that it was an industrial superpower, so they certainly had excellent steel and could produce excellent quality goods.
Let us know what you think when you hone it up.
The STIZ I have is one of my best razors....phenomenal shaver. While I’ve read on here about variable quality, that is certainly not my experience.
I have one Ruskie razor and it took a good edge and shaves well.

the Bay is full of them. Most look mistreated badly. Maybe I should go look again. I haven't looked in a while. I can use a 5/8 round point, but its so much more fun to use a 6/8 or a touch more. Holds the lather better.
I think I have only seen one larger sized Russian razor but I haven't been looking all that hard. I get the impression that Russian consumer items from that period were made to the standard of nothing more than was necessary to get the job done. Hence mostly 5/8 sized straight razors. Seems most western barbers had the same outlook on straight razors in the time they were allowed to use them. Not a too exciting attitude but very practical.

It's not STIZ.
It's 2ГПЗ = The state ball bearing's plant #2 in Moscow (2-й государственный подшипниковый завод).
40 = year of item manufacturing 1940.
Rare model and good condition for russian vintage market.
And first four symbol НКСМ = People's Commissariat (Department) of the middle-level machine-building industry (Народный комиссариат среднего машиностроения).
This Government Department was head-level manager for 2ГПЗ plant in USSR.

Didn't the Soviet Union join the war after Hitler unilaterally terminated Germany's non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union in June 1941? So in that sense, this razor is pre-WWII! In any case, I'm sure razors didn't change much between 1939 and 1940.Quote:

And about the razor: I also add that according to our local enthusiasts, Soviet razors of pre-war years are better in quality (primarily steel) and shaving feel than post-war.
