Current crop of Revisor razors?

Hey all, it's been quite a while since I've frequented the forums...I guess it was back in the "old" SRP days. Anyway, I'm looking to get a new set of razors for daily use as a barber and I've been eyeing the Revisor razors the most. Does anyone have any experience with how these are lately? I've read some posts from a few to several years ago and the impression I got was a good one. Just trying to get an idea on whether or not they take a good edge as I haven't been overly happy with recent production Dovo's.

Incase it may matter, I'm looking at their 5/8 razors, particularly the 7 day set as that would give me a good enough rotation to work with.

On the other hand, are there any other current production razors I should consider that may be comparable in price for a set of 5-7?

Honestly, check out the buy/sell forum and pick up a good vintage set. That's what I would do.

I you want to go the current production route, I would get in touch with Ralf Aust.

He did a 7-day set for me some time back (incl. engraving English days of the week on the spine) and his work has always been excellent.
In fact, Austs and Friodurs, with more than 20 each, are the largest groups of razors in my den.

Over all these years I could never bring myself to buy a current production Dovo, as reviews and feedbacks suggest inconsistently made, below average razors (by my standards).
I do have some vintage Dovos from Fritz Bracht days though, but that is an entirely different kettle of fish...

Revisor?
I contacted them once (in German) about a purchase of some razors and they couldn’t even be bothered to answer.
If that is the kind of customer service people get when buying, I rather not deal with them, imagining what customer service to expect if one of their razors had an issue.

Like Beluga, I would go with Aust for a set. I have two and they are great

Is it allowed to use proper straights as a professional barber?

ya current production, Ralph Aust,, Revisor has some great razors though. but are you going to go thru the trouble of meeting the regulations of using a real straight? most places dont allow it without using an Autoclave or similar for sanitary purposes.

It depends on the state you are a barber in over here in the US. Some states allow it while others will not.

Autoclaves generally aren't necessary...again it depends on how stringent the rules are in a particular state. As long as it can be disinfected as other tools are it is allowed in the state I live in.

My barber no longer gives shaves, but he uses a shavette to shave my neck. After he completes the shave, he dips the shavette in Barbacide solution and sets the razor aside to dry. He does not replace the blade for every customer. Apparently, in Illinois, that is acceptable. I suspect he would use a new blade if he were shaving a face, but he no longer does that.

In many places it's not just state regulations but insurance issues too.

Like Ray, my Barber shaves the neck. My first trip I saw him use the same shavette without any disinfectant.

From then on I take one of my straights. He really likes to use quality blades.

Unfortunately, I have seen a lot do just this. In a lot of ways, I've always seen shavettes as being less sanitary...there are a lot more nooks and crannies that are harder to keep clean when compared with a traditional straight blade.

My Barber shaves everyone’s neck with a real straight.

He strops it before every neck but as far as I can tell the same razors is used for everyone, its just folded and put in his counter for the next neck.

I would prefer to take my own razor but he will probably strop it and I am worried it might get hurt. Shouldn’t worry probably because he’s probably a lot better at stropping than me!

According to this article https://blog.fendrihan.com/2016/02/a...north-america/ , in Ontario an autoclave must be used to sterilize a real straight razor. I imagine that is after every customer. A straight razor would need metal handles to stand up to continually going through an autoclave.

All the barbers I have seen are now using Shavettes and I believe the blade must be replaced after every customer. If he is a young barber he probably does not know the difference between a real straight razor and a Shavette. I asked a young barber recently if he was using a straight razor. He said yes, when clearly it was a Shavette he was using.

It's definitely a real straight because I picked it up to look more closely.

I was interested to see what it was as I had just got my Dovo (it didn't have any name that I could see and I think it was old).

It's possible he uses a different razor on each neck but it's not the impression I had.

He is definitely not a young man, in fact I'm 57 and I reckon he might be older than me.

While we are on the subject of sanitizing, how are razors sanitized.

I read on here that razors are sanitized before they are sent to buyers.

Do you just soak it in Barbersol. If so just the blade dangled in it or dump the whole razor in scales and all?

It occurs to me that it wouldn't be such a terrible idea to sanitize my own razors periodically, just to keep them socially acceptable. I use a cpap machine and have to give my mask a good clean very regularly.

Soaking the blade for 10 minutes in a fresh Barbicide solution should sterilize the blade.

Barbers are required to make a fresh Barbicide solution every day.

I have had a few of Revisor’s razors a few years ago. All of them were excellent quality and shaved really well! Beautiful razors at a reasonable price too.

This is exactly how it is done, but to be more in line with sanitation regs, it must be washed with soap/water first before the barbicide. Then, just a decent sized cup so that the blade portion is submerged in the solution with the scales outside the cup keeping the pivot and scales dry.

The Italian made razors I bought from Revisor (Prezioso) are the best razors I ever owned, they stay shave sharp with a minimum of stropping. However the Revisor made razors I bought are terrible. They are well put together but don't sharpen or hold an edge well at all. They were pricey too. That is my personal experience with Revisor razors.

They should help you.

I have only one Revisor straight razor bought a few years ago. It shaves and holds an edge as good as any other razor I have.

Actual 7 day sets are expensive, new or vintage. Probably the most economical way to get one for barbers use is to get a deal on the purchase of 7 ew 5/8 straight razors of the identical model from a seller.

I bought a Revisor a couple of years ago (this one: https://www.revisor-solingen.de/inde...es-0001-detail). The shop had been down for a couple months due to health issues, so I had to wait a bit until they were back up and running before making the purchase, but the correspondence was always good. It took a while to get a decent edge on the razor - I had to send it to 3 different honemeisters before getting something I liked (this was before I was able to hone decently myself), and it wasn't until it went to GSSIXGUN's shop that it was honed properly. Since then, it's been a fantastic shaver, so now I'm happy with it, but it took a while to get to that point.

I should add that this is the only modern production razor that I own, everything else in my collection is vintage.

So this isn't a glowing endorsement, by ay means. But overall I'm happy with my purchase.

I probably should have contacted them but I didn't, and it has been a lot of years since I bought them.
I would still do business with them, I will just be more careful next time. One razor is mediocre and one I don't like at all.
