My name is Alexandre, I live in São Paulo/Brazil, and I'm willing to buy a Straigh Razor. My first one.

I've been using a Shavette, but I want to buy a better one.

Would you please help me choosing it? I'm thinking about expending $150.
I was looking for different razor on clasicshaving.com and I liked both Dovo's and Thiers-Issard's. Which one is better?

What is better? Stainless steel? Surgical wuality stainless steel? High carbon forged steel blank? Steel?

I'm looking for a good and long lasting one.

I also wanna buy a Strop.

Linn, if you see this, please help me. I wanna make the best buy within $150, and as a newbie to the straight razor world I really would appreciate some guidance on this.

There are usually good starter razors available in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum. Best place to get a strop is from Tony Miller at http://www.thewellshavedgentleman.com/

My best advice is to buy a shave ready razor from one of the guys here or maybe even a kit. At this point I wouldn't worry about types of steels and grinds and brands. Once you get a razor and use it you can better formulate whether you want to go up or down in size or change grinds or try stainless. Its hard to make these choices which are very personal when you really know nothing about straights and have no experience with them. If you buy from one of the guys here you will probably spend way less than half of what you want and save the rest and buy your new razor later when you really know what you might like.

So my advice to you is initially buy a carbon steel either 5/8s or 6/8s hollow grind. Get it in a kit from Tony or one of the other guys.

Welcome! You got some good advice there, which should get you set up for less than $150. When I logged on this morning, I saw a couple threads offering shave-ready razors for $25-35 (didn't check them out, but that's the kind of deal you can find here ... with extra shipping to Brazil, of course.)

The best thing about getting a set from Tony is that you KNOW the razor will come ready to shave and you'll be getting top quality gear for your dollar.

Get a set from Tony (the wellshavedgent)

The BST is great if you are looking for a particular razor, or if you want to start really economically and not buy a full set (i.e. - not buy / substitute some of the things in the set with something already available)

Having said this, you will need and eventually buy the elements for a set - if you stick with shaving, that is. So if you can afford it now - get the set from Tony. Then you can get additional razors from the BST, if you choose to (and most people do ). Or you can upgrade the brush, soap, etc. I don't think you'd be upgrading from Tony's strops, though
