An Interesting Development, CVH

Gents,

I have a mint or new CVH MK 32 in thick scales with collar pins. I also have a worn MK 32 in ivory. I don’t trust myself pinning Ivory yet, so I sent the razors to Alfredo for a simple scale swap.

The first interesting thing is that though both are MK 32, the heel of the pictured razor would poke out the bottom of the ivory scales even though the wedge was thin. The second interesting thing is that the thick scales with collar pins are ... ivory. I had just assumed that this was a razor with plastic scales, and that's really what it looks like, the schreger lines if present didn’t jump out, and I’m used to looking for them. But Alfredo did the hot pin test, and they are indeed ivory, and he should know.

Has anyone else seen a thick-scaled ivory razor with collar pins? I seem to recall that TI make ivory-scaled razors thick and with collars, I saw one at Planete Rasoir once, and it had a certificate of ‘legality’ for the scales.

I have not seen a razor with thick ivory scales as mine have very thin scales. That does not mean there are no thick ivory scaled razors but just I have not seen any.

I recall two points about ivory scales from a well respected and now departed member. The first regards Schreger lines and the appearance of those depends on how the ivory was cut and where on the tusk it came from. The outer part of the tusk can give a very plain ivory with the higher grade ivory from the inner part of the tusk more likely to show Schreger lines depending on how, like wood, it was cut. So, absence of Schreger lines does not necessarily indicate non ivory scales. Secondly, as you have found out pinning with collars is also not necessarily an indicator of non ivory scales. Identifying ivory scales can be tricky.

I've never seen thick ivory scales on any razor either. Usually if they are thick they are fossilized ivory which commonly are thick sometimes very thick.

Either way Elephant Ivory has a certain feel to it. I find nothing else feels like it.

It was an interesting exchange with Steve. I assumed the scales were ivory and the swap was because of the crack. I did find it odd the scales were much thicker than typical ivory and they had colara that appeared to be originals.

I’ve seen many ivory pinned with collars but usually done by someone who didn’t want to mess and stress pinning ivory without the collars.

I did mention to Steve the ivory with the crack and he asked “ivory?” I had to get back to him on it and the pin test was definitely ivory.

The Schreger lines are there but not as discernible as most.

The only other one with thick collared ivory that I’ve seen in person was at Planete Rasoir, and it had papers from TI to prove it. I’m assuming that it wasn’t a fake since PR is a TI dealer and it was just one of many dozens of TI razors that they had. But they only had one that I saw.

There’s a thread on another forum and another person has a thick collared ivory razor though I of course have not seen it in person.
