How old is this razor?
Hi all, just wanting to pick your brains to see if any of you can shed some light on how old this razor is (the one to the left in the first image with the Shepherd razor)... It has no maker’s marks, the spine arches up slightly at the point and again at the shoulder / shank, has a nice short tail and has just arrived yesterday from Sweden :) For context, the Shepherd razor below it is circa 1770 (and is in rotation as my current shave).
I suspect it may be 1740 – 1760’ish

Hi Ruben and welcome aboard! Well that razor certainly has the look of an 18thC piece. I'm not an expert in these matters but there are folks here who are. Expect to hear from them soon.
Cheers
Mike

Welcome to SRP. Also have no information.

Without any markings, and goi g by shape alone, i think you have figured out as much as anyone can. Welcome to SRP.

By blade and tang size I would guess 1770-1810.
-
It will have a large possible range. With out marks that range will be quite wide as that style was made for quite some time. It’s likely quite old, as indicated in the above posts.

Thanks all. I guess it is now time to clean it up, rescale it and see how it shaves :)

Good luck with that. If it was mine I'd be framing it on the wall. Wouldn't want to mess with its originality. But its not mine so go for it and let us see when its done.

Thanks @Gasman.
Shaving with the old razors is something else as the lines are not quite the same as newer straights but the steal is remarkably good so holds a great edge ;)

I do have a few of my own so i do know what you mean.

There is something very satisfying about shaving with one of my late 1700s razors. Any other implement of this era is locked down in a museum behind a glass case. But, here is this 200+ year old razor still doing what it was intended to do, and doing it well. You just can't get that immediate feel for history in many other ways.

So true @Walt, these things are addictive... I started off shaving with a new straight razor but quickly found myself chasing the old ones as I find them to be much nicer to shave with (it may just be phycological)...
