Newly acquired Shumate Razor Austin Tex. U.S.A. 5/8"

Shumate Razor Austin Tex. U.S.A. 5/8"
Made in 1900~1904,Half Hollow.

Founded in Austin, Texas about 1884 by Albert Teagarden. Joseph Shumate became a partner in 1895, and the name became Teagarden and Shumate. The firm first dealt in cutlery about 1900, and soon changed the name to the Shumate Razor Company.

In 1904, Shumate moved to St.Louis, Missouri and no more than two years later the main office was located in St.Louis. In 1919, Fred S. and A.E. Roth became partners in the firm and by 1927, they were selling pocket knives marked Shumate, Roth, Aristocrat, Stainless Cutlery Co., and Waldemar. The firm operated until 1932.

Very nice razor and nice history. Those razors are great shavers. The steel is quite hard so honing takes a little more work than some others for instance Sheffield steel but it will take and hold an edge quite well. Thanks for sharing.

Use JNAT to sharpen the edges, wait for today's SOTD.

It looks like you like to try out different finish stones also. I sometimes hone with one finisher for one shave then hone the same razor with a different finisher for the next shave and then again with another for the next. I just like to see which stone works best for each razor.

Use a variety of different stones to increase the fun of different shaving razors, find out the way you want, and shave happily.

This is my nicest one. 9/16". The others are 5/8".

I also have this one in aluminum scales. Light name etching.

This one has heavy etching except for the blade which I make out to be Crocket

I would have had a 4th but the day it said out for delivery, I was here and I saw the mail lady stop. I checked and it wasn't there and after that, tracking said delivered. Whoever got it didn't return it to the PO. It would have been the nicest of all.

The Shumate Razor Austin Tex. SHANK position of this razor may have nickel plating, and some nickel layers have disappeared, and the Shumate produced in the later period has no nickel plating.

I have a tungsteel like the one on the far right, although mine is made in St. Louis. I love the smiling edge and the steel is so hard it is hard to hone but holds that edge for a long, long time.

I also have two tungstens which are also great shavers. That era of American steel was spectacular.

I'd really love le to have a.round toe tungsteel like that one in the middle. That makes a nice eclectic set. It looks a bit wider. I believe my square point is 5/8". Is that round point 6/8"?

Austin Tex. RAZOR is also very hard, probably tungsten steel.

Yeah, me too. I found that same ad when I first got my tungsteel. It was quite entertaining. I like the part about "Young man, your beard is soft now..." It reminds me of the old medicine shows.
