tiny chip

I bought a shave-ready razor and waited 2 weeks for my paddle strop, and just as I was about to strop and shave with it, I noticed that there is a very tiny chip in the edge of the blade. I am anxious to finally try a straight but I don't want to cut myself up. Does the edge need to be perfect for a shave? Can I use a pasted side of my paddle to fix it up a bit?

I would contact the person I bought it from and see if they will refund the money or make the razor right , before I did anything with the razor . IMO , shaving with a razor that has a chip in the edge is like driving a car with a flat tire .

I have a razor with a barely visible chip and it shaves fine. That said, it's at least as likely that the chip will get in the way of you getting a good shave, so I agree with Dave's suggestion.

If you can see a chip, it would be a long process to remove it with pasted strops.!

I agree if its big enough to clearly see with the naked eye I wouldn't shave with it. If its located at the very end you might get away with it but I still would send it back. If a razor has a small microchip, meaning something you need at least a 30x loupe to see you can usually safely shave with it. Alot of guys are really anal about the edges and want perfection and there's nothing wrong with that but an edge doesn't have to be 100% perfect to still give great shaves.

I'm with Biggie S: if you need magnification - it may still shave great and not leave your face raw at all. No danger for your strop either. But if you can see it with a naked eye - I'd be very hesitant to try it.

A diamond paddle will take quite a while to fix this, especially if it NEEDS to be fixed. I won't have the patience.

I'd say don't hone out - you won't be able to return it if things don't turn out OK. Contact the seller and see if he'd fix it or take it back

Not to hijack the thread, but where did you track down a 30x loupe? I've only been able to find up to 15x. I have the 60x - 100X hand held magnifier, but would prefer using a loupe.

Actually I have a Zeiss Loupe with two parts one 12x and the other 24x together they give 36X. I got mine from a place in San Diego that specialized in military surplus and optics but they went under and now is run by some guy in Nevada. It's called Deutsche Optik. You can check Edmunds Scientifics also.

Thanks! Given that it's Zeiss optics, the clarity and resolution must be very good.
