Question about swedish steel.

Could anyone tell me about highest quality swedish steel?
I have been checking out this razor lately...is it worth the money?
when you pay this kind of price....are you paying for the work by hand like decoration...marks...etc...or is this steel really something special...
I am very happy with my stainless and carbon steels....but maybe i am missing something special..has anyone actually tried this razor?
what the shaving and honing qualities of this raozr would be?

Swedish steel can be on the level with other steels good razors are made of, but there's nothing special about it that should make you want to get one at any cost. If you're curious, get one, but your shaving career won't end if you don't.

What specific razor are you talking about? There are some very high quality Sweedish Steel razors known as being great shavers like Heljestrand. As firestart said though, there are many great shavers (many of which you already have in your collection), so you should be fine either way.

I have been told this razor is a "must try" by someone whose opinion I respect very much - Michael Parker. He and I have somewhat similar tastes (what with him teaching me a lot :D ) I think I am even starting to mirror his switch to hollows over wedges...

Anyway, the BL: looks are a bit too much for me. And it's not exactly cheap... So it's on the backburner, unless I manage to convince myself I don't even want to try it

Actually silver still is considered the cat's meow in razor steel though there is certainly nothing wrong with Swedish Steel, Damascus type steel, spanish steel or the stuff old U.S razors were made of. You can get exceptional shaves from all of them.

I have a BL and its a very nice razor and a superior shaver. I'm not crazy about the gold leaf eventually it wears off.

This discussion about Swedish steel being any good, reminds me of a conversation with a Norwegian friend of mine, many years ago, about German or Solingen steel in general. He said that the line of thought, where he came from, about Solingen steel was, it was great as a second choice, if you couldn't get Swedish steel. And it is important to note that Norwegians don't have any bias for the Swedes over the Germans, as one might think. Now that was the belief years ago he said. I don't know how different the quality is today.

Thanks for this post - I don't know what the referenced circles are, but I myself love Swedish steel; also - it seems that Dovo's top models use it, as well as the Wonderedge.

Considering all these, I would be inclined to accept that there is something special about it

I've got a Wusthof in Svedish Steel. Is this different than Swedish Steel?

You know if the Germans import Swedish steel to make razors, it's gotta be good stuff.

Slightly related: my Dad's favorite chisels were made by Erik Anton Berg of Eskilstuna, Sweden and man could he get those tools sharp! Obviously they were made of good steel which I'm guessing the Swedes didn't need to import.;)
