How does this razor look?

I just purchased this off ebay and it looks really nice. could some1 tell me if this is a good brand? i`m gonna post the item description. the ivory is really nice.

Up for auction is a neat old vintage ANTIQUE STRAIGHT RAZOR. It is marked UTICA KNIFE & RAZOR CO. SOLINGEN, GERMANY on the reverse tang. The front tang is stamped RED-POINT MADE IN GERMANY and has the number 917. The bolsters and Pins are SILVER as well as the inlaid printing RED-POINT RAZOR and the rim around the RED Spot in the Ivory Handle. The IVORY Handles are perfect with no chips, cracks or Hairlines. There is also a small ivory stop around the pin to keep the blade from going into the handle.

looks decent. is that real ivory?

It looks like it is in fine shape, after a good hone I bet it shaves just as good as when it was new. I have razors that look far worse that are great shavers.

it is supposed to be real ivory. after i get it and clean it up i`ll post some closeups

I am not sure about the real ivory part.

The razor itself has some hone wear and it may have a bit of a smile, but it is certainly going to be capable of imparting a good shave.

I'm going to vote celluloid on those scales...:hmmm:

+1 on the celluloid. I've seen a red point in person (in much worse shape) and it's celluloid. Typically, I don't believe real ivory has such significant veins of color. You'll see once you get that razor in person that the striations are very defined. Also, the hot needle test will prove all doubt if you're still unsure.

I am assuming you purchased it because you were under the impression that it is ivory...may I ask how much you spent on it? or could you provide us an ebay link to the item?

celluloid or "French ivory"... i have it's twin. they shave fairly well but can be temperamental on the hones.

i do not think i have ever seen real ivory scales with bolsters and scale adornments like this. I'm not saying nobody ever did it... just saying that i have not ever seen it done in a production model razor.

i bought it since it looked nice and i can practice my honing on it instead of my dovo.

I have had several red points, great shavers, but the scales are not ivory. caveat emptor.

as long as it is a good brand and a good shaver, that`s what i was looking for. thanx

yeah, i honestly don't know enough to look at a pic and say "that's not real ivory" buy i was suspicious, that's why i asked. these guys know their stuff though. let us know how it shaves, besides, the scale material can always be changed and really won't effect the shave! lol. i just hope you didn't over pay because some one was misleading.:nono: that happens way to often!

I'll go out on the limb here, I am 99.99% sure, those are not "Real" ivory you can tell easier than a hot pin test, not that it really matters, if you like the razor..... Take the razor after you get it and take a cloth and rub the back side scale vigorously, and the Ole sniffer will tell ya that it is not ivory... A slightly camphor smell will show celluloid or catalin, Bakelite will smell like burning electrical wires, and plastic will smell, well like plastic, bone and ivory will have a distinct sharp odor....
All that aside Red Points have a good solid reputation as great shavers so you should have a nice razor after it is all sharped up!!!!!

Keep in mind, that everyone is more concerned that you paid to much because of the "Ivory" statement, than anything else, they are only looking out for a new member here at SRP!!!!!!
