Default I think I have a new favorite

You know something guys, the "American Steel" post got me to thinking and I've come to a conclusion. I think I like my Gencos better than any thing else.

See for over a year now I've been searching, in vain, for another Dubl Duck to take the place of the one that was my great grandfather's. There is nothing wrong with it and it is a great shaver in great condition, but because it is an heirloom, I want to keep it that way.

However, I think the price they command is just flat out ridiculous. I'm sorry I refuse to pay more than 30 bucks for any model DD. So as of now unless I happen across one in an antique store or flea market, etc. I ain't gonna worry about it.

In the meantime, of my top four razors, three are American made. Two Gencos and one Union Razor Cutlery Company (a.k.a. Dixie Cutlery Co.). They shave every bit as good as Pap's Goldedge and I paid less than $20 for all three put together. In fact I'm so impressed with the Gencos and see them so often, I'd gladly snap one up again. I think the Gencos are my new favorites. I wish I had the money to spend on some of these but I just don't. Lets face it you could have 10 Gold Seals at the price of one Goldedge.

Oh well, I've vented and feel better now.

    Later,

    Chris

I picked up a Dixie on the cheap the other day. It had a small chip in the middle of the blade, but I've honed it out after about an hour on a Norton 220/1k and 4k/8k. Now I just need to get it shave-ready!

    Hey CRuzin,

Let me know how that Dixie turns out.

Just as an interesting story. Mine just happened to be in an antique cupboard that my aunt bought at an auction. Turns out the darn thing was new, never used. The box showed a little wear but that was all. It hasn't had to see much honing to get it shave ready and now that thing slices through my whiskers like a hot knife through butter. I try to keep an eye out for them but rarely see them. Anyway, I hope it works for ya!!!

    shhhhh!
The ducks weren't ALWAYS hundreds of dollars. One used to be able to get Wonderedges for 30 bucks, Goldedges around 20, 15 for satinedges.....
then people started talking about them....
I managed to grab a few on the way up but nowhere near as cheap as they used to be.
Like that Dorko that went for over 500 the other day....not counting on catching any of those at a reasonable price for awhile....
Still, enjoy those cheaply made mass-produced Genco's, they had to make *something* out of the scrap from old water pipes, automotive parts, and the like. If only they could be as good as a quality made Zeepk or Kriegar razor.....

Shut up already! Oh man, there go the prices on Genco's...

Good thing I have a good supply to hold me over for the rest of my life.

Seriously though, American steel is fantastic as a rule.
Back in the old days folks used to buy American made because it was higher quality than the imports. Not because of some jingoistic propaganda.

    Such is life...
