Thread: Question about Dubl Duck Special #1

I was lucky enough to find a Dubl Duck Special #1 last weekend at a small antique store. The blade seems to be in great shape – no chips or rust to speak of and very little wear to speak of, at least to my untrained eye. I figured $20 wasn’t too bad considering what I’ve seen others sell for on eb@y. I really didn’t have the money to spend, but this may be the only one of these I’ll find in the wild. J

However, after looking at a few others that have been pictured I’m wondering if this one has been rescaled. It has simple, clear yellow plastic or celluloid scales with no marking on them. The pins don’t look bad, but I can’t tell if they’re original or not. The pictures I’ve seen of other Special #1’s have had words stamped on the scales, so I wonder if these are original. No big deal if they’re not since it would be a good reason to have custom scales made, or make them myself, but I don’t see the need to pop the pins if the razor is all original.

Any ideas?

It appears that the tang, shank and spine are blued while the blade is bright metal. Is this possible or is it more likely that the "blued" areas are just discolored due to age and handling?

Could you sketch the color variation you're talking about on MS Paint or something similar and post that? I don't see that blue in the photo

I cant tell ya for sure that the scales are original but I would bet that way from what I can see..
The blued tang and even the spine on some, is correct, don't polish it off unless it is rusted, That is a trait of the #1's
Looks like you made a nice score there, get it sharpened up and have some fun with that duckling....

I had one that I know was original with yellow scales that looked like yours. Sold it awhile back and wish I hadn't.

Well, from the sound of the feedback I’m getting it appears that this razor is NOT going to get rescaled and will be getting sent out to be sharpened in the near future.

It’s nice to find something at a good price and know that it won’t just be collecting dust on a shelf somewhere.

I’m sure I’ll be considering getting some hones, pasted strops, etc. as well if I manage to find any other decent razors out there. Darn AD’s where does it stop????
