Check out the 'trademarks on base metal table ware' file that Tony 'portal 5' posted a few weeks ago. It's a handy reference for makers and marks. I also posted a link to French makers marks.
cheers
Stephen
You clever bugger;)
I have just looked at the other picture of the razor and I can indeed just make out the begining of the word Shrewsbury.:bow
Any good then? anyone.
I'm wondering wether to just buy from makers I've never heard of before !
Might find some gems, and I can aviod the usual rush for the sought after razors.
I think you're spot on with that thought Marcus. There are so many cracking razors that come out of sheffield, for instance, that will be every bit as good shavers as any famous brand names. I am now much more attracted by the blade size, shape and condition and scales than I am by a name. There are some to avoid as per the sticky in the newbies section but otherwise the razor worlds your oyster. I always listen to more experienced tips about certain makes but wouldn't repeat what they were in case they suddenly become too expensive! At least before I get a few that is...:D
Mind you, I wouldn't say no to a nice Rogers square point wedge with ivory scales:D and leather matching box! for a fiver:D
BTW that Martin is a deadnaught isn't it??
Hey Marcus it's only a deadnaught if it's busted! Looks interesting! Where do you dig em up......
Slightly OT I got A Weiss recently, v. nice but also found a curio dealer out in the sticks near here. He had a Weiss bone saw (definitely spooky). Considering I had never heard of Weiss, to see 2 things by them in 2 days - I'm keeping away from crossroads and black dogs for a while.......
A bone saw ! Oh lovely ! If you get a request to sharpen one of them up make sure to make a note of the customers address, just in case someone goes missing
I wonder I old Mr Todd had a matched pair like that............
I got it off evil bay. If you look at the point, it's not a square point, it looks like a very "mild" dreadnaught(ish, looking) The toe of the point comes out further that the back part of the point point. I think?
Update---
Martin razor arrived today, bit slow:shrug: (along with a very clean Sheffield Kropp with a bit of hone wear, but almost sharp(ish))
The plot thickens, The Martin say " Martin & Co, 53 or 63 Grace Church St" ??
So, "Who he then" ?
A little update on the Martin, the scales are Ivory:tu
