Glad I found this, I was considering buying one on eBay. Right, "Gold Dollar" it is! (j/k) :-p
Late, late entry but I would add my weight to the argument against Kriegars.
Totally wasted my money on one from ebay. How these sellers cans ell them as razors is beyond me. I use mine as an envelope opener now.
I ended up getting a straight from Whipped Dog and although it wasn't for me with all the palaver surrounding straight shaving, the razor itself was a completely different item from the Kriegar. I am genuinely ashamed I ever bought a Kriegar.
The lowest-price new razor I'd trust is a Dovo Best Quality, currently around $80.
Read up in our FAQ section; there are links there of razors to avoid and vintage brands known to be good.
Better luck next purchase!
Yeah, I am sticking with Safety Razors, I am much happier than I was with a straight. Where the Kriegar wasted hours of my time, the lovely razor I bought from Whipped Dog showed me what a razor can be but I folded in the end with all the stropping etc!
This is just my $0.02, but I wanted to see if SR was for me, so I went to my local shave shop and bought a Parker Shavette for about $15. It uses half of a double-edge, so i got a pack of Merkurs. And I started slowly. And now I LOVE to shave. And I love to tell people that I'm using my straight razor. When i tell some of my male friends, you'd think I just told them I was raising wild weasels in my living room!
I am now experimenting with different creams and soaps. And I am hoping that Santa(my wife) brings me my first good quality straight razor this year. So, IMHO, you CAN start out for under $20, but it allways helps to know who to talk to.
It was my first mistake also, I use it to scrape stuff that sticks to glass. And to scrape the car's old inspection sticker.
