Hello,
I am new to straight razors, I am planning on purchasing a TI new, and I had a question regarding the different models available on classicshaving.com. Some razors are marked as "Sheffield Silver Steel" and others are marked as "Evide Sonnant Extra". I am assuming those razors are made with different types of steel. What is the difference between the two?

Now as to purchasing your first fazor, may I make a few recommendations prior to making that purchase?
First, and foremost, get a copy of Lynn's CD. It is over 3 hours long and talks about most aspects of the straight razor (and, yes, even how to start shaving with one). It is a great investment.
And, next, prior to buying your beautiful 7/8 spike point, look through the classifieds for something like a 5/8 round point. Most all razors there are truly shave ready, and the round point will be much more forgiving as you learn to manipulate the blade to remove those whiskers with requiring stitches or a blood transfussion. :roflmao And it will help you determine what you want in a razor through experience. That way when you get ready to buy that really nice razor you will know which one you want and need.
Visit the Newbies forum and ask questions. The only dumb question is the one not asked.

Thanks for the friendly welcome. My first post was to the newbie's forum where I introduced myself and asked for recommendations, if you are interested you can read about it here: http://straightrazorpalace.com/newbi...endations.html. One of the forum gurus recommended that, based on my requirements, I look at a new TI razor. I am not opposed to purchasing a used razor from the forums, I am just investigating all options.
First razor I bought was a new from factory TI. It's beautiful but still not dialed in right (ie truly sharp), I'm getting there. My advice is buy truly shave ready from these forums or elsewhere. I have a 'stable' of five. The four that I bought since (from here) my first purchase are my favourites and, together cost about the same as my first. Seriously, do what you want, I don't regret what I did but I'd do it differently if I started again.
TI's are made from Sheffield steel exclusively. They are typically extra hollow grinds or singing razors. The various decoratvie names are a function of the vendor you choose. TIs are a great choice. Just be sure to have it honed first regardless of TI's claims they are not sharp enough from the factory.
The Evide model you quote is one of TI's models. I know some of TIs razors are marked Sheffield and some are not and to be honest I don't know if they are all made from Sheffield or not. I would not assume they all are. The same that some are marked singing and some are not but I don't know that any extra hollow is automatically a singing or not. Whether its Sheffield or not I wouldn't worry about it. TI makes great blades either way. The important thing is that you get one free from defects like warps and mis pinned blades.
