Please help a clueless lady!

Hi guys!

My fiance has often talked about how he would love to start shaving with a straight razor. He has always had a very thick beard that grows back quickly. I have been doing a little research on this site, and would like to buy him a straight razor with all of the accessories.

Any advice on what I should look for? I think a good quality used razor would fit his needs. I have looked at the classifieds here, but I have no idea how to differentiate between razors.

He hates having a beard, and bet me he could keep from shaving until New Year's. I don't know if he'll last that long, so this might be a nice consolation prize.

Look for something like a 5/8 or 6/8 round point. You can't go wrong with those. I wouldn't get hung up over brand names. Ensure the razor comes shave ready (will be marked as so in the ad). The razors being sold in the classifieds are quality razors. Our members aren't trying to dump junk on other members. They have reputations to keep. Decide how much you want to spend then find one in your price range. Pretty simple, really. You will be getting a good quality razor at a good price. In addition to the razor you will need the following at a minimum:

1. Strop (hanging the best, paddle will work)
2. Shave soap/cream (personal choice)
3. Brush (from under $10 to obscene amounts of money)

You won't need hones at the start, although a pasting strop with some diamond paste or CrO paste isn't a bad idea. But not required.

Also, I highly recommend getting him a copy of Lynn's CD. It's over 3 hours and covers most aspects of the striaght razor. It provides a starting point for those new to straight razors.

For a heavy beard I would suggest a razor with more "meat" to the blade than the standard 5/8'" hollow ground. A razor with a blade size (width) of 6/8'"' or greater or a "wedge" type razor would suit a beginner with a heavy beard the best.
