More in the Mail
Got a few more razors in the mail. Traded some .357 brass and a set of .223 dies. One is a Frederick Reynolds with a bad chip by the tang:( another is a Ontario 83 which is in good shape, but needs some more work on the stone. The third is a W.R. Case and Sons Manganese that had a bad problem with the point. Maybe used as a pry bar? Who knows. Well I thought I would trash the blade and keep the scales (plastic, not ivory), but then I got to thinking, Why couldn't I just shorten the blade and make a smaller razor? I plan to shorten the scales respectively as well. Still deciding on how to fasten. Micro fasteners or pinning?

Looking good so far, I think the Ontario is a Genco, Gencos are notoriously good shavers… looks untouched by a hone… nice.
You could grind off the heel on the Reynolds, clean and hone her up and she should be a fine shaver.
Yup… shorten those scales and post up some photos of that Case Manganese. depending on your choice i would probably use 1/16th brass rod and peen... if you fear damaging the scales then go for Micro Fastners, they are quick and removable in case you decide to use them on some other razor (get the tool too).

Honed up the Ontario and it has quite a keen edge. Probably gonna shave tomorrow with it. Thought about grinding the Reynolds and using it. The Case has already been rebuilt. There is a write up in the workshop threads. I ended up pinning as to not have to wait for the fasteners and the tools. The scales on the Ontario are kind of messed up. They are quite thin and look "pinched" through the middle area. Maybe held with a rubber band in the past? Who knows.

Fixed Reynolds
Cleaned up the chip on the Reynolds. Also took some 0000 steel wool and flitz to get the blade decent. A little Dremmel and dressing up and done. Spent a good bit honing and stropping. It shaves, but it is like shaving with a cleaver! Just something about it. There is a small ding in the blade that I did not notice while working with it.(DUH!!!) I will have to remedy it later. Shaved this morn with the Ontario. Nice!! That thing shaves very good. The scales feel almost toylike though. They seem very flimsy.
