Torrey and Worcester Razors

As a third generation native of Worcester, Mass. I am nostalgic about products made here and have purchased several Torrey and Worcester Razor Company razors from e-bay. I have read good reviews about Torrey razors but little about Worcester Razor Company razors.

Were they the same company? How do Worcester razors compare to the Torrey's? Anyone know anything about the history and location of the Worcester Razor Company? From what I can gather Torrey razors were made at 128 Chandler St., the same address I took Tai Chi classes that closed and is now apartments and an accupuncture place.

I show Torrey in business from 1880-1963 but I show nothing more on Worcester other than that they were there in MA Perhaps Syslight/Jim will poke his head in here as he has some great sources on razors....

How about quality and performance of Worcester Razors vs Torrey? Anyone know anything about that?

Excellent idea. I was going to take one of the Worcester's and an Emil Jansen to Howard Schecter to be conditioned and honed (no offense gssix, it's just that Howard lives in the next town to me) but I think I'll take one of the Torrey's instead. Might be a while depending on Howard's workload. The reviews here on Torrey's have all been very good; the Worcster's that I have also look to be very high quality.

BTW- I am not going to shave my legs and pits with them!

oh cool. I used to bike by there all the time when i was interning down on Pleasant St.

I bet any blades made in Worcester are pretty solid, but maybe that's my bias. hehe.

Worcester has so much history, i should start making note of points of interest. Course at this point it's probably just an empty building, not doing much of anything.
Did y'know Emma Goldman and Sasha (Alexander Berkman) ran an icecream shop in Worcester (down on Water st, i think). Awesome! :rock:

Sorry I didn't see your post before this. No I didn't know Goldman and Sasha but I was very close to Herman Smith who owned an ice cream plant off Grove St. that closed int the early 60's- Smith and Fife Ice Cream. You are right, there is a lot of history here and most products made in Worcester in the late 1800's to the middle 1900's were very high quality. That is not to say that products made here now are not high quality but it just doesn't seem to be the same. What else is new?

Anyway, I have used both razors. Both are high quality. The Worcester razor is a little heavier and the seems to drag more than the Torrey. The Torrey is lighter and seems to glide better and gives me less nicks. Overall I would have to say the Torrey works better for me. Of course I am still new at this. Perhaps I have to refine my technique with the Worcester but so far the Torrey is winning.

I also recently learned that there were two other straight razor manufacturers in Worcester- Williams Razor Company and Columbian Razor Company. Anyone know anything about them?

Just got two razors from Worcester. One is Worcester Razor Co. and the other is Columbia. Shaved with the Columbia and it shaved damn good. Got a BBS shave. Compared it to a wedge B&W and I think it did better. Let you know how the Worcester Razor Co. one shaves tomorrow.

Shave results and sharpening tests are in. These are some amazing razors. And pretty darn cheap too. In fact, they sharpen up better than my Dovo Best Quality. Extra hollow grind on both; the blade really sings when it cuts through the whiskers. Great shave too, BBS on both. Can't say anything about the longevity of the edge, but so far, these two razors are great.

Hey, I found a Worcester Razor and wanted to know about it. Did you find any information about the company?
