Thread: D C Halsted age

Hello all,
I recently picked up a D C Halsted at an antique shop and am curious if anyone out there can give me an idea as to the age of it.
It is a 6/8 french point and says "Old English Razor" on one of the scales. The tang stamp reads: Manufactured by D. C. Halsted Sheffield.
The blade is in great shape with no pitting and only took about 15 minutes to polish up to mirror shiny!
One of the scales is broken off at the rear pin and I plan on having this be my first re-scaling attempt.
I make knives as a hobby from forging the blade to making the handle and stitching the sheath so I don't think I can screw up the rescale too badly. And if I do, I can send it out to be redone. I have some Black Walnut left from a knife handle that I think would look pretty cool on the razor.
Anyway, any help on estimating the age would be appreciated.
I see that denmason restored one a while back (beautiful by the way).

I have never heard of D. C. Halsted so I am flying blind. The fact that it says Made in Sheffield and not Sheffield, England dates it prior to the 1891 Madrid Trade Accords. If you can post a picture maybe blade and handle shape and decoration might allow a better dating.

It is definately a pre-1891 razor but with a more modern double hollow grind. It has horn handles I believe. that in itself doesn't tell anything except celluloid didn't hit the razor world until about 1870. this is probably an 1880's variety English razor. It is in very nice condition. Is it a good shaver?

I picked it up for $10.55 including tax.
I just got it sharp today and have not shaved with it yet. I had a hard time with the honing due to the slight curve of the blade not laying flat on my wider hone. After I switched to one of my narrower hones it sharpened well. It does appear to be very hard steel that should obtain and hold a good edge. Anyway, it fits my hand well and should be comfortable to use.

That's a great price. I have a couple of razors by little known Sheffield makers and they are great shavers. Looks good too.
