Do your different razors take different edges?

Do your different razors take different edges? Mine do. Or at least it seems that way. The best one I have is a razor I don't like very much, because of its size: a little German 4/8 spike. But it takes a WICKED sharp edge that feels very grabby & will bite with ease into the shortest stubble.

My W&B hollow chopper takes an edge like that, but seems to lose it fast. My W&B wedge chopper takes a very good edge, but not quite as good as the German spike, nor does it retain it as long (although it's more durable than the W&B hollow).

Aside from possible metallurgical differences, the only theory I have is that the little spike is very thin, owing to its small size. Its thinness makes it more like a DE blade than a str8.

Anyway, isn't it interesting how razors have personalities?

I think they all take different edges, though with similarities, otherwise we wouldn't keep collecting more & more! From my experience & what i've read, hollows take a more aggresive edge than wedges, & become marginally sharper i believe. My Friodur's the thinnest i have & i can get it a tiny bit sharper than the Heljestrand. Then there's a few hollows in the middle & a wedge trailing at the rear. It still shaves great, just different, i guess.

very much so. it all depends on size, alloy and blade geometry, but all my razors have a very different feel.

Its not just different razors that have differing shaving characteristics which can be ascribed to scale differences and balance in addition to steel, grind, honing and other factors but even the exact same razors can be different. I have two SRP TI razors consecutive numbers #38 and 39 and they shave so dissimilar its unbelievable.
