3 degrees of seperation

I posted in the workshop a razor I just finished and stated it had a neat story behind. Now I've read stories of guys getting their grandfathers razors and such, but I've had no such luck (my grandpa didn't use one). My dad has my great grandfathers straight, but is not ready to come off of it, but I understand (he doesn't use it, but keeps it as a memento. He did give me his electricians knife though).

Now about my 3 degrees of seperation.

I replied to a Craigslist ad on some straight razors in my area (2 dancing twin Fridour no-stains). I asked where and when I could meet this person. She gave me a number and address and said to call before coming over. I made the call and set a time and away I go.

After reviewing the razors upon my arrival, I started some small talk and stated that my grandfather had lived just a few blocks away. She had asked where and I told her the name of the road. Turns out that she had grown up right around the corner. She said "wait a minute, I recognise your last name. Your grandpa lived at blah blah address, second house on the right. I said "yep, that was his house"

She asked me if I knew "Art". I said "the guy across the street from grandpa?". She said "yeah, him. Well those razors came from his barbershop." WOW!

I asked if she had any more stuff and she did. She had a Genco (rough), a Bailey razor, a Hess shavette and the 2 Dancing twins. I took the whole lot.

I thought it was pretty cool. so there is my 3 degrees of seperation from my grandpa. Now if I could just get dad to come off of great grandpas razor, well...............

Very cool story. Now if it was me I would call her back and say BTW, did you have any of the old fellow's sharpening stones or razor strops ? :) You never know, might be a coticule in the closet.

I bet as time goes on if your Dad sees how serious you are about straight razor shaving you'll get Grandad's razor yet. :tu

Here are some pics. The top one is a Bailey. The original scales were cracked

The second one is a Fridour and those acales were warped bad so I put some osage scales on it.

Third one is another Fridour with original scales. All these blades were in good shape, just some crust on the scales

Bottom one is a Hess

I had asked her if she had any of his strops or hones or anything else. This is all she had.

She threw in a Genco Gold Seal that was to rusty to do anything with. It just crumbled in the tumbler.

Great find. Looks like they weren't neglected.
