i have been looking for a razor to add, so i have 2 :) Looking on the bay i have started to notice that the phrase "shave ready" means different things to different people.
I have seen multiple listings that are "Shave Ready", but when i read the description the seller usually knows nothing about razors and it was from a lot they found in an estate sale or some nonsense.
Anyone ever have any luck with "Shave Ready" bay razors or do i need to invest in a hone for these "shave ready razors"? :)
If you accept that
* ebay razors are never shave ready
* new razors are almost never shave ready unless pre-sharpened by a honemeister
you'll save yourself a lot of disappointment.
I think that you answered the question yourself. If the people seller does not know what shave ready means, most likely the razor would have to be honed (in addition to any minor restoration that it needs). You may want to either send the razor to a honemeister or try to hone it yourself. Since you have 2 other razors, which I gather were honed by a real honemeister (please correct me if I am wrong), you already know what a sharp razor should feel like. If you are interested in the honing, these may be a good razors to start practicing honing, as long as the blades do not have any other problem s(which is almost never the case with razors from ebay). Probably your best way to go for reasonable priced razors in shave ready condition is hte classified section.

Not intending to thread jack, but which honemeister did you use? I'm in Ohio too but I don't want to ship my razors half way around the world...

Sorry I missed this. I think once you have a benchmark, you can start doing your own honing with the next razors if you have done enough reading, have the right tools and feel you can do it. I would not start with a custom razor but I would also not try a Pakistani (they do not take an edge so you would never know if what you are doing is right) or an Ebay special type of razor (razors with warped edge, uneven wear, etc...). The easiest one to learn with, believe it or not, would be a new razor; but who would like to take the risk? Well, I did for my second razor ;-)Quote:
