Spike Point! My first razor modification
I think Dubl Duck Dwarfs come with a square point? In any event the one I got off ebay had the point mangled. It looked like someone lifted the razor about 10* with just the point on the hone and sort of ground around with it on both sides. It's obvious they weren't simply trying to blunt it... who knows what they had in mind. This ruined a triangular area about 2 mm up the toe and 2 mm of edge in from the toe. No way normal honing was going to touch it. Initially I just figured I'd have to hone about 2 mm off the edge but this would bring the edge just up into the shoulder... ugly, not really an option. Then in a flash of brilliance it struck me that I could just take 2 mm off the toe end! I'd go from a ruined square point to a preferred spike point and preserve the existing edge at the same time.
measured, straight edge, sharp pencil and then painted with a sharpie. Wrapped the blade, tang and first inch of the scales in a few layers of tape and got out the dremel. Tried it in my vice but I couldn't see what I was doing so I unclamped it and just free handed it. Once started, it ground pretty easily. I was really surprised. Some sparks and it produced a very fine dust. I would take off about 1/3 of a mm in a go and then stop to check for heat. No heat? I really expected it would get hot but it didn't. Amazingly enough I got the end square with the sides of the blade. 320 sandpaper laid on a flat stone. Then 600 and 1500 laid on a very thick pad of folded paper to get the edges rounded off at the same time. tadah...
