I hate my Dovo Best!!

I have honed it and stropped it and it gives me a great shave for a day. The next day it won't cut butter. I have NO beard. Really I could go every other day without shaving. Probably every 3 days without shaving.

I noticed the crappy shave on my dominant hand pass this morning, stopped and strapped about 10 times. TPT, no tickle :thinking:.

10 times on the linen, TPT a little tickle, skipped the strop and went back to shaving.

Ended up with a burned face and a clean up with a Schick 66.

For sentimental reasons I will not run it over with my car, but I am NEVER shaving with it again. SS and I do not get along, never have not even with kitchen knives. Hopefully carbon steel and I will get along better.

Thoughts are appreciated.

From my understanding, Dovo Best razors are carbon steel.

I suppose you have other razors that you have honed, stropped and shaved with that don't have this problem ? Maybe sending it out to a forum member who is known for his honing services and giving it a go then ?

Maybe you've over-honed it? :shrug: I suggest sending it to a specialist so he can have a look at it. The worst thing that can happen is getting a perfect edge in the return mail! :shrug ;) Keep at it! And if you plan on running it over with your car, don't! I have an old car and I won't mind doing it for you! ;)

I'm not one to enjoy seeing people in frustration so if I'd be happy to take the razor off your hands..hmm..I mean ease your frustrations :w

This is the one that I have. Cosmetically different, but the same blade.

At the Dovo website this razor is listed as a shaving and thinning instrument. Others are listed as Razors.

WTH, I thought shaving and razors went hand in hand. Unless they are specifically talking about shaving as in a head hair treatment and razors as instruments of whisker destruction.

If that is the case and I bought this 10 years ago, then the razor I have is not for shaving the face which is why I am having so much problem?:thinking:

Is there a difference in the Dovos between this version and the "razor" version?

This happens from time to time. I've had a number of razors that I've struggled with and considered selling in my frustration. Invariably, after I've left them alone for a while (a "time out" if you will:p) I go back and somehow get them right. Some of these end are now among my best shavers and I'm glad I didn't sell them.

I'm having the same problem with my Friodur at the moment, btw.

I have a Dovo Best Quality blade in half hollow grind with Birds Eye Maple scales. It's a great shaver but must be honed properly as all razors must. Try sending yours to a well recognized honemeister before giving up.

i had the same razor as my first razor and had the same problem turned out I was overhoning with paste. when I started using a coticule it woujld go some 10 shave between touch ups and was a GREAT razor. so don't let the learning curve daunt you. it's a nice one.

I had similar problems with my Dovo, I think I had overhoned it.
I ran it lightly across the wooden part of a pencil tip to remove any wire edge (not sure if that was really necessary) then rehoned it fairly lightly. I made a decision to not constantly rehone it in pursuit of a perfect edge, and instead I started stropping on leather more. Lo and behold the shave got better and better each time I used it.

As yours fails the TPT that definitely needs fixing before you turn to stropping though.

It my just the fact that your blade needs honing, In my own experience these entry level Dovos are usually good blades,You may have a dud but I would send it out to be honed first before giving up on it.Paul

I'll take it back to the 12 and see if I can save it. If I can't I'll send it out or run it over.

Send it out! You won't regret it... I've heard that these razors are not "entry level" razors to be honed... :) Joke1176 hone mine a couple of months ago and he had a bit of trouble, I recall.
If the one you have is a "best quality" Dovo, stick with it. I have one - my first razor, by the way - and is likely to be my best shaver. It needs to be honed by a masterfull hand, it seems.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. I could not get it to shave worth a ****, no matter how much honing on the 16k and stropping. I am not sure what I did, but (ok, maybe I know what I did...) I stuck with it, purchased a vintage, and then went back to the Best. Rehoned it and it now shaves great. I discovered newspaper too. May or may not have helped as much as just putting it aside for a week.

Don't give up on it! Its a great shaver. I even polished mine up, now its all nice and shiny.

Well... I have not reached the point where I am honing myself BUT I have a Dovo Best and it was my first razor and i can tell you that after having Glen (GSSIXGUN) Hone it ,..... well it is my best shaver.

Just tonight I posted my best SOTD ever and it was with my Dovo Best-Quality.

The right honing will give you a great shave.

I have a Col. Conk which is made by Dovo and I have a similar problem. It will pass the HHT with flying colors, and before I get half done with the shave,it starts pulling a little. A few laps on the strop, and then it seems to be ok.

Nooooo!! Don’t run it over, you may damage the car and insurance won't cover.

Do you have other razors that shave well and keep the edge longer?
Sometimes a second opinion is the best option… “Two heads are better than one” even seasoned professionals seek will a second opinion. Send it out… at least you will have a better idea what's wrong with this blade.
Some here on this forum will even assess the edge for you without charge.

I sent my blades to GS. He is going to evaluate and then hone.

I think the problem is my white Arkansas. I think this my be what I need to get a 4k and an 8k Japanese wet stone.

You made a good decision. Objective analysis will tell you what needs to be changed.
