Can a Square Point be to Square???

I have a Case Red Imp SP that no matter how careful and how light my pressure is I always get nicked and always by the SP. This razor is like brand new and I'm thinking the SP is just to pointy. All my other razors are SP's and I don't have an issue with them at all.

Just wondering if anyone else has had such a point?

Is it the 133? Those are notorious for having dangerous points; I think they actually extend a bit past the spine, making the blade a spike instead of square point. You could mute the point by going a little toe heavy on the hones, or you could sand/grind the tip of the razor back a bit to get her back to square.

Thanks holli4pirating, yes it is a 133 I thought the damn thing was possessed. Glad it's not just me. I thought it would be sacrilege to dull the point as I have a goat and it's nice for clean lines but just not worth getting butchered. I'll try just to mute the point first then if needed will square it back.

Dulling the tip on your 8k will not make it any less precise to shape with. It'll only remove the needle tip, maybe 10 micrometres. 3 or 4 rotating swipes point down each year will be enough.

I knew an old barber who always did that with a square point. He would slightly round the very point on the hone. I leave them as is and just watch it but I have never had a 133.

Yea, I've never had any problems with the points on my 132's or Temperites (full hollow or "wedges"), but those 133's are real Imps. I don't remember cutting myself with one, but I was being extremely careful since it was on loan to me.

If you don't want to change the point, I guess there are two ways you could go. You could set her aside until you are more comfortable shaving (but I think that might just make you forget how spiked the point is), or you could shave with her regularly till you're used to her (which is probably what I would do). If both of those failed, then I would look into muting/squaring.

Dubl Ducks are bad about this. The extra blade length just exacerbates the problem. The only way I can shave with a duck without nicking myself is to shave with it for several days until my instincts adjust to the extra length and extra pointy corners.

Reminds me of Mark Twin's quote about the cat jumping onto the hot stove lid. He said that he would never jump on a hot lid again but the tragedy was that he would never jump on a cold one either.

I was shaving with a square point and extended the razor too far towards my ear making a down pass on my sideburn. Dug the point into my ear a bit. Luckily I was holding the blade lightly enough for it to move in my hand and it didn't cut very much. Enough to keep me mindful of where the point is since then.

If it causes you to much trouble I will take it off your hand at no charge to you.:w I got a Sears that has a nice spike and it has drug across my ear but I love the way it shaves and just watch where the tip is. I like the spike for those hard to get spots though.

I've got a 4/8 heljestrand with a bit of a french tip that can bite. It's like it's got Little Razor Syndrome & is overtly aggressive to make up for it's small size. It is perfectly formed though, i will add!

I've never had a problem with my Imps but I do have a Clauss that nips at me every time I use it. I have 4 Clauss straights that are square points and one the one nips at me. A good part of my collection is square points and there are only a rare few that nip at me every time I use them. Remember, each razor has a personality a little different from the next. ;)

really square points and spikes are a different animal. There are variations to both but in general a square point is more forgiving and some are more rounded off while a true spike like the red imps do extend out a tad and they can really get you if your attention gets lax. However, its still not as bad as a traditional Japanese razor with the short blade and a spike at either end. Hijo!

Thanks for the offer but no thanks.......lol all that i buy are SP's so the type doesn't bother me just the little nicks from the damn imp.
