looking for a new razor $200-3 something range

Hello all,

I all of a sudden got the urge to add something new to my collection. I currently own a SRP LE TI razor, dovo 5/8 high carbon, and a tosuke (which is great but a little awkward so I don't use it as a daily shaver. The difference in edge retention between the SRP LE and the dovo is night and day. From what I understand, the SRP uses the 6/8 sheffield silver steel. I like the weight size and I love the edge retention. I like round-tips because I've never really found a use for the pointy tip and it just seemed to get in the way. I was looking at getting another TI, a stainless dovo, or one of the maestro livi regrinds. I know from the reviews that the maestro regrinds are good and it sounds like most everybody would prefer them to a dovo or TI but I was wondering about edge retention. It doesn't look like these are stainless. Edge retention didn't really seem like a problem until I was alternating between the SRP and the dovo carbon. The dovo gets dull so much faster than the TI. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Livi re-grind, or new grind, as they are frequently called. I have found it to be a great shaver and have not noticed any issue with how long it retains an edge. In fairness, I use it in an informal rotation with several other razors so if it had slightly less longevity I might not be able to quantify it. I will say that when it does need a freshening a few passes on chromium oxide or diamond seems to put the edge back where I want it, so to me, it's not an issue either way.

I doubt that you would be disappointed with a Livi.

I'm thinking the livi looks like my best bet. I've also been eyeing the Iwasaki but it wouldn't make sense if I'm not using the tosuke in the normal rotation. Maybe I'll try the tosuke tonight and think about it.

you will love that razor the 1/4 hollow ti, i have a 1/4 hollow wacker i bought a while back from a member here and it is my go to razor, ill grab it before any of my wedges also, definetly have to get one for myself, you can get ti horn scales i think at classic shaving http://www.classicshaving.com/catalo...96/6517458.htm or at vintage blades http://www.vintagebladesllc.com/vsho...cat=134&page=1 the 2nd one is way more reasonable

It looks like a 63-65 Rockwell hardness. However, its hard to compare razors this way since Rockwell hardness isn't usually advertised.

Before you do anything else, write to Martin at rasurpur.de and ask him if he can get the 1/4 grind Le Grelot with ram scales or put them on for you.

By the way, I have the 3/4-full ground and like it alot.

Get a razor from Philadeph! Alex is a stand up guy. I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.

When TI came out with the Silverwing they issued it in a few different incarnations. Tony Miller had one of the early prototypes and sold it awhile back.

They eventually settled on an alloy and said that as their stock of razors was depleted all of their new razors would be made with the new improved alloy that had been tested and finally settled on in the Silverwing. I have one of those and it is a great razor.

It doesn't have a round point but I really like my Super Gnome 1/4 hollow. Mine is the old TI steel and it is relatively cheap. If you are on the USA side of the pond Classic sells them here.

I just got a reply back from japan woodworker and it looks like the smaller size Iwasakis are on back order and the larger ones are a little too rich for my blood. I might go another couple of rounds with the tosuke before I decide to wait for the Iwasaki or get a European style. Japanese razors may look like chisels but the materials used and craftsmanship is second to none.

And why is it that the Tosuke isn't tops of your rotation?:hmmm:

If your Tosuke was the razor you used the most, and enjoyed the most, then I'd recommend dropping serious coin on an even nicer Iwazaki. But....


Japanese straights are neat.....but are not much fun/rewarding for evertyday use in my opinion.

The 3/4 grind LeGrelot is a fantastic shaver, really. But the feel will be closer to what you already have, whereas the 1/4 grind will give you a much, much different shave experience.


To get a "new steel" TI, all you have to do is buy either a AOS straight here, or go to knife center and buy the special coiffiuer, which is the same 1/2 hollow gring mentioned by JimmyHAD.

I still say the 1/4 grind LeGrelot is the best of the bunch, or rather will shave you in a different manner than the other choices mentioned.

Do those TI's come from rasurpur shave ready, or do you have to drop the cash for the sharpening service? I'm still bad enough at honing that I send my nice razors out, and only hone razors under $100 bucks myself.

The LeGrelot's are nice shavers and have that new TI harder feel to them. They can be a little different to hone, but a couple more polishing strokes usually handles it. Feels a lot like the Silverwing Razor by TI. I believe they were re-tooling last year to a different steel and obvioulsy these are some of the results.

I don't know how shave ready mine came, as I alsways have to screw around with a razor myself to get it where I want it (except a custom I bought from Russel Baldridge, that came shave-ready indeed!)

Funny thing (agreeing with Lynn here). My Le Grelot 3/4 really, really liked a bit of polishing on a hanging Cro2 strop.
1 either the bevel wasn't set well enough(and the hanging strop gave it enough of a "reach around" to polish the edge) Maybe??

2 It just needed a really fine abrasive to get it very sharp

I don't know TBH, I'm a learner !
Try a Le Grelot though. Lots of steel in 3/4 or the nicer looking one(1/4 grind?) for the £ or $

They definitely aren't very forgiving! When I first got started (this was after I was getting the hang of using normal straights) I would have several nicks after each shave. I kind of shied away from it for awhile but I think I'm getting the hang of it now.

I have many questions but I'm sure everybody has answers

1) Lynn mentioned the LeGrelot has the new TI steel feel. Does anybody know the hardness?

2) Also, you mentioned the AOS razor was made with the new harder TI steel. I was afraid of the AOS razors because when I asked customer service they didn't know their a*& from a hole in the ground. Has anybody tried these?

3) Is the TI Sheffeld silver steel mentioned on most of classics TIs the newer harder steel or is that the older softer steel?

If I am not mistaken all of the current production of TI is the new steel introduced on the limited edition Silverwing. Even if it is stamped "Silver Steel" I could be wrong about this , I was wrong once before. :shrug: I know I read it in a review on the Silverwing in another shaving forum and I think I got a notice stating the fact with my Silverwing. Great shave BTW, honed by Lynn. I can't help with the second question.
