Hi everyone. I decided to start using a straight razor after seeing just the yearly cost of blades or disposables. Luckily, I have a straight razor, marked "BLACK DIAMOND" and G.H. PUMACKER (over) SOLINGEN, GERMANY. The blade is 5/8 and the spine appears to be rust blued (hence the "Black Diamond" name, probably) and the scales appear to be pale yellow bakelite. Before trying to make a sow's ear into a silk purse, does anyone know if this is a good (decent) razor? Thanks in advance.
Welcome to SRP. Yes it is a good brand. If there is no damage to the blade or scales (handles) it could be a great shaver. Chances are it may need to be honed to get up to snuff. You're best off sending it out to a known honemiester (expert) to get it shave ready.
The SRP Wiki here has many tutorials on shaving, honing, preparation for the shave and all things straight razor shave related including videos demonstrating the above. Check it out and ask all the questions you want.
Thanks for the reply, Jimmy. That takes a load off of my mind. :tu I gave a quick read to the Wiki section last night, but will go back and repeat today. I'm certain it will need a professional honing, that's the next step.

When you do finally get started this thread gives a good method of dipping your foot in the water rather then diving in. It is the way I did it and it worked well to ease me into shaving with a straight. :gl:
