A Few Great Straight Edge Razor Finds (Value?)

I recently (3 months ago) got back into DE shaving (could not be happier!!) and I decided to rummage around my grandfathers old heirlooms that he left to me when he passed away about 20 years ago because i thought in the box of old cufflinks, money clips, and jewlery I thought I remembered that there was a straight edge or two. Much to my shagrin, I found 3 razors, 1 which was really beaten up, one which appeared to be slightly used (the 1975 Puma) and one brand new in the box that was wrapped and appeared to never have been opened(the 1933 wursthof)
I have enclosed pics. If anyone knows the value of these razors I would be interested to know what I have on my hands. With the Wusthof I have the origional box as well as papers that came in the razor. if anyone knows let me know, and sorry no matter what they are worth I would never considder selling them, as there is a great fealing about using something that was owned by my gramps......

If anyone can recomend the best honemaster to send these to I would appreciate it. I have looked at a few websites, but if there is someone on this board that is exceptional I would like to send it and pay for it through a Straight Razor Place Member........ Thank

wow- you seriously scored! :eek: Those are great razors! I'm pretty sure the Puma would fetch the most at the moment (well over $100), but a NOS Wustof would probably fetch a pretty penny as well.

Any of the honemeisters advertising in the Classifieds would treat your babies well. All are well worth the $20.

Great finds and an honor to shave with. You really could not have asked for better heirlooms.

What's the 3rd one, out of curiosity? There are a lot of restorers on this site that may well be able to bring it back to life, if the razor is worth it. If it's beat up, it's probably the one your grandfather used most, so it'd be cool to bring it back to life.

The Wusthof and Puma are great finds. What is the third razor? Chances are it can be cleaned up / restored. I'm glad you're keeping them. I wish I had a str8 my grandpa used. Enjoy!

Awesome! Welcome to SRP. Great job getting those razors.

I have that Wusthof and just shaved with it the other day. It's been in my rotation since I got it last summer. They are fantastic shavers. Can't remember what I paid, or what I saw the last one go for.

As for the Puma, just watch ebay and you'll get an idea what they're going for. They come up often.

Bloody hell! They're great! Been keeping an eye open for a Wusthof for ages to match my kitchen knives. Not seen one that perfect though!

You are certainly starting out right, with those two hard to find razors! I've been looking for a nice Wusthoff for ages with no luck. Both should hone into extremely fine shavers you will be proud of owning. Don't know about the third one. Congratulations on your finds and welcome!

The Thrid Razor

Thanks for all of the great replies. The third razor, the one that is pretty beaten up uses a removable blade. I guess it would be considered a disposible, because the blades pop out and a new one is inserted. It is made by L. & A. Razors with a circa date of 1965. I am looking for replacement blades for it online, but compared to the 2 that I have posted, it is really nothing special. It reminds me of the Dovo or Feather straight edges that have the removable blades.

Someone said that they had been looking for a nice Wusthof to match their kitchen cuttlery. This was one of my surprises when I found the razor. I have a very high-end of Wusthofs in my kitchen, and I have had them for at least 15 years, so now I have a nice matching one in the bathroom as well. I tried the Wusthof last night on my final pass of a DE shave just to see if it was sharp enough and how it would feal. Compared to professional shaves that I have received before I definately need to send it out. Some have PM'd me with sugestions as to where to have them sharpened, so feel free to PM me with sugestions.

Shagrin was not the right word. I am a stock broker not a writer. I have always stunk in my spelling and vocabulary and grammar.....:gth

There are plenty of very capable honers here. Who you pick will probably be down to where you are based, so, where are you based?
I love my Wusthof kitchen knives. They're great aren't they? I've got the Culinar stuff, so it's all stainless. Cooking & food are other loves of mine!

I would have felt shagrin at realizing that I had two super-fine straight razors languishing forlornly, in a dusty box, for 20 years.

I have that very same Wustho,in mint condition as wellf. It is has some really very classy lines to it, nice smile, great steel. A fantastic shaver!

You could probably get ~$175 or so for mint razors like that (Puma & Wusthof). I'd suggest not giving in to that temptation though, as they are bith great shavers, and the fact that they are family heirlooms makes them irreplaceable

I would never give in to that temptation...... It is actually not a temptation at all, even though my wife gave birth to our 1st child last Monday, and 2 weeks ago I got laid off :chop:

Oh well, I am very excited to get these all sharpened and ready to go.

Someone above asked where I was as far as location for a honmaster. I am in Massachusetts...

The Wusthofs are some of the best knives that I have ever used. My mother gave me a very expensive complete set for my high school graduation present 15 years ago because she was not sure if I was going to go to college or to culinary school. In hindsite I should have gone to culinary school as I would not have gotten laid off as a Stock Broker 2 weeks ago...... I guess everyones hindsight is 20/20.......

And I guess it was my shagrin that I had not found and started useing these awesome heirlooms much sooner that this passed week.....

Well my hand has been forced a little bit by being laid off, and having a 6 week old baby at home so I am going to be selling these 2 razors. As much as I do not want to, extreme circumstances have forced me to do so. Instead of throwing them on an auction site, I am going to offer them to the folks on this site. THey have been professionally honed by Lynn Abrams, and are shave ready. I have a good idea of the value of the razors, but I am not asking for a specific price.
