I am brand new to straight razor shaving. I have a Dovo Best quality, which I shave with. I also have several vintage razors that belonged to my grandmother, who was a barber for many years. One of the razors she had was a Dubl Duck Lifetime Grim Reaper. I would like to know if anyone refinishes these, and if so how much it would run. The blade is in good shape, very minor rust, and the scales seem to be yellowed. Any help is appreciated.
There are several restores here that would be able to help you on this and do a great job at it. I do think they will ALL want you to post pics so they can see what the work entails.
I've dealt with a few different resto artists here and have always been happy. Check out the Gallery (in the Workshop) and PM those whose work inspires you.

Welcome to the straight razor place.
In the classifieds there is a restored Reaper. I don't remember who did it but it is beautiful. I see a bad spot on the razors edge and a another on the back side scale. They will hopefully clean up.
Check the classifieds for the Reaper I am talking about. It will give you some insight.

Welcome to SRP. The scales on Lifetimes (mine and the few others I've seen) have scales that are yellowed like yours. Whatever you do, if at all possible, keep the scales. A Lifetime with original scales (in good shape) is worth far more then a Lifetime blade rescaled. If that was mine I would hit it with some metal polish and hone it up. Mirror finishes are cool but I don't mind a little patina on a vintage razor.

I really don't want to endorse one restorer over another, but I've seen some of Glen's work on scales/bolsters like these and he does well. Maybe send him a PM-- he could also tell you of others who would do well with this one, he's a class act.Quote:

Since you're new to this I would STRONGLY strongly strongly caution you NOT to try to take a dremel or any other motorized tool or buffer to that razor. One wrong move with a felt bob and a dremel and you have a cracked blade and a razor (except for its scales) hovering around worthless.Quote:

We did those just to show how they could be re-done, you really don't want to have to do that to a Reaper they are way more valuable intact...
The razor you have there is very collectible, you need to use extreme care if you are going to restore that yourself....
DD's have always been a love/hate razor, they have the finest blades around, not many if any are better....
They also have the worst most finicky, delicate, scales ever to curse a razor...
