I'm considering the purchase of an old Torrey razor. I'm told the blade has no nicks or imperfections, only discoloration. In your opinion, if I go at this with metal polish, will I have decent success?
Thanks!

some MAAS or Flitz might do the job, but I don't like that discoloration... I hope none of that is due to heat or something like that. honestly I'd try a different blade, but then again, I'll admit that I don't know what caused that discoloration.
I would also stay away. For the same reasons.
you won't know until you try, but small blade combined with significant hone wear and unknown condition of the steel makes it a definite no go for me.
It's too bad -- the scales are really beautiful - it's an old metal-scaled, very ornate Faultless. I was hoping MAAS would do the trick, but I'm sure all of you are correct - and I'll probably be disappointed...
Perhaps I should contact Max at Madaspen and send him pictures to get a quote on a restore - probably replacing the blade with NOS and probably repinning, too. No idea what the cost is like for a blade replacement, since the scales are in good shape. Does anyone have any other suggestions for a restorer in the U.S. who could swap out a blade and do a repin?
Figure I should consider that option before I give up on this razor...
Thanks!
I have had 1 or 2 blades with that rainbow look and they turned out fine! I hope this is the case with yours.
Swapping out a blade is easy. Just send it to someone who knows how to pin along with the blade you want in the scales and voila! It would be quite cheap too.
But before you do that, go ahead and try to put a bevel on it before scrapping it. You have nothing to lose.
Some of that discolouration might be due to someone having dabed the blade in some sort of wax or oil in the past - once it gives up the ghost discolouration can result. The darker specks look a bit more of a problem though - MAAS might not be enough - you might have to go down to 400 grit wet and dry - or lower.
