Actual testing vs Thinking about it
Sounds like either way is good and it boils down to personal preference. I re-honed a razor that was honed with tape and it didn't seem to take me much, if any, longer to re-set the bevel and hone it up. So, to me, I don't care either way. Free.
I tape mostly because I like the way it looks afterwards. if it gets to the point that the edge is to steep I'll find some one to regrind. I have bought razors that was rusty pitied and ugly. sent it to a pro and when it returned it was beautiful. sharp and made me smile. I was told when I honed it to use tape. I will. the person who did the regrind is a pro. I will listen . we learn from our elders. if not in age in experience. well that's my 2 1/2 cents worth.
Or even better ......... or maybe worse ........ (dunno why but this topic always brings this sketch to mind ) :)
