Pabster, my initial thoughts are this.
Although the razor is a weighty beast, the balance is so good that this isn't an issue.
I stropped the razor, but apart from that i used it as it arrived from Robert. The shave itself was comfortable, but to be honest i think i can get it shaving even smoother.
The long tail meant that it's still highly manoueverable despite being the largest blade i've used! The grip was very secure due to the deeply jimped thumbnotch & the linked arrow filework is gorgeous! I'm very happy with it!
On a negative note, I've noticed that although the blade was wiped down immediately after the shave there were a few water spots already that will need a quick polish.
Finally, when the razor arrived & i took it out of the box there were two little marks where the scales had contacted the toe of the blade. When i looked closer i found these to be slight corrosion. I contacted Robert immediately to let him know & he responded to my email in around a minute (despite being on the verge of leaving for a holiday). He's going to resolve it when he returns.
I've never seen this happen to any of his other work posted here & i'm guessing i've just been pretty unlucky! I'll ask him what can be done about preventing the water spotting at the same time. I wasn't hanging about, so i'm not sure why it did that.
Photo's when Robert's made it perfect again, as it was when it was posted to me.
Thanks Lewis. Is it enough to tempt you away from a Friodur though?!:D
Ben, on the water spots, I have heard hard water does it. I don't know if I have hard water where I am but I too get those spots, particularly on mirror polished blades. I have learned to accept them and I just don't worry about them as there is nothing I can do about it. (I am not into polishing a shaving sharp razor until it is dull and needs honing again) If you figure something out please post it. In the meanwhile maybe someone else will be along who has solved the problem.
Hard water here too. Maybe i'll have to get the water supply softened to keep it lovely, or shave with imported bottled stuff!
Ben, I also have a mirror polish CS RW blade -- living in London the water is very hard and yes, one does have to be thorough with drying afterwards. After drying, I'll strop it on linen for 10 passes just to be extra sure the edge is 100% dry.
A little Maas will take the water marks off no problem at all.
