    Default Help identifying some razors

    Morning all,

After a quick trip round a local antiques market, I came back with the following:

One is a Wostenholm, one is a McQueen and the other seems to say VOMER EXTRA, but the etching is badly worn.

The Wostenholm seems to return some searches, but the others I'm having trouble identifying. Anyone heard of the others? Any comments on value or quality?

It looks like they only need a quick tidy up and cost me very little

    Chris

The Wostenholm is a very good razor and you will enjoy the shaves off of it when properly honed. The other two I have not hear of and can not read the stamps. Is anything else stamped on the Tangs besides the names you noted?Others may chime in and be able to give you some info.

I have a bunch of straights that are not well known makers that shave really nice. The final test would be to have them honed up and give them a spin. That's part of the fun of this hobby. Antique shop finds are GREAT!!

If you haven't honed any razors yet yourself I would at least send the Wostenholm to a Honemister. If you would like to learn to hone your own blades one or both of the others would be a good one to start on and you would have the Wostenholm to use as a gauge for your honing.

    Good luck!

As for quality, Wostenholm are a good quality razor, once honed by someone competent in honing razors, it will make for a great shaver.
Apologies - I wasn't meaning a dollar cost, just simply are they cheap quality or higher quality items. I've no intention of selling them, just wondered if I'd bagged a bargain

I paid £10 (about $16) which I was very happy with!

Ironically the Wostenholm is in the worst condition, the scales are totally warped (in fact it's almost a wave shave from the top!) so that was goinng to be my 'project' of the three. The McQueen is literally perfect, except there is some corrosion around the underneath jimps.

The unidentifiable cream-scaled razor is in poorest condition but has some wonderful etching and a lovely diamond shaped profile to the blade.

I also have a Kropp that I was given a while back that needs a fair amount of work, but at present I'm lacking the tools and knowledge to really clean these up! Hopefully with the info on here I should be able to get all of them to a serviceable condition.

Welcome to SRP. Those look like they would be fine shavers once honed up. Check out the razor data base in the SRP Wiki here for more eye candy and maybe you'll find one of the obscure razors in there. Also great tutorials in our Wiki for all things straight razor related.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
