Can I happen to get any sort of additional feedback for this guy before I decide to go on and invest the monies into it?
I have about 20 different razors in my collection- from vintage adjustable Gilettes to old 1912 Gem SE's, etc. My Merkur is the best one I own. I have the silver version, though.
A sampler pack of blades is a good idea too. I prefer the Gillette series that comes in different colored boxes (green, black, yellow <super sharp!>, etc.) Feather blades are also very sharp compared to other brands.
Good luck!
Hi there,
I can't speak from experience when it comes to using a Merkur razor, but I'm familiar with some other brands such as Gillette. I know the most popular Merkur seems to be the 34c(HD), and have no idea if the model you're looking at shaves the same way.
Those members who recommend a sampler blade package are doing you a favor. Normally, a Merkur blade will come with the new razor, but it's a trick! Heh, yeah, the Merkur blade isn't very popular with most members. Those would be best to try after you get a feel for other blades and have a good reference point.
If you like, send me a message and I'll mail a few of the more popular blades out to try. I have Crystal(mild), and also Iridium and SharpEdge ones that seem to work pretty well for many of us. Start with the Crystal and take it from there after a few weeks of shaving experience.
Let me know if that interests you,
Martin
Good looking razor, and a great shaver. As the description says, that is the classic merkur. The 34G is the gold version of the HD or heavy duty - same head, heavier handle.
I'd go along with the recommendation to get a sampler pack of blades. I would check out the sampler packs at West Coast Shaving.
