That is an extremely compelling point...

Your iwasaki is going to be my next and final razor purchase. Beautiful, and very reasonably priced!
Lance
2 days left and still no bids...can it be this will not even sell for the list price?!
Were I you, I'd be inclined to go for it, Jim. She'll get over it like my wife did when I bought my '64 Buick Wildcat. Believe me, it cost a lot more than that lovely razor.
Oh Jim. of course you are right. You don't need anyone telling you what you want or like or need to have.
I was just trying to sound logical and smart. No easy task, and certainly out of place for me as steel and stone constitute a substantial portion of my lifestyle.
I was unaware of Iwasaki -Kousuke's singular effort. I have read some about the lost generation after wwII, which I assume is the time period you are referring to. Interesting>
Kevin, I'm sorry I replied so strongly. I have recently become somewhat passionate about certain elements of Japanese history and culture, and one of them is the Iwasaki family--I think in large part because of my barber's influence, and the fact that my wife's uncle has been telling me stories of his father shaving with an Iwasaki as preparation for ceremonies (he was a Buddhist priest, as all of my wife's uncles are, as well)...it's becoming perhaps too personal for me.
21 hrs. and still no bids...If I only had the funds available Jim, I'd get it for you and take payments :)
Gentlemen, here is a clear example of why it is important to have not only a joint account with your wife for life's necessities, but also two other accounts, one for her, and one for you, that are used exclusively for discretionary spending.
I have such an account with a varying balance between $0 and almost never over $1,000. That money is mine to do with as I please without budgetary oversight from my Boss.
Of course, I have to come up with the money for that acount on my own:confused:, I don't get to dip into the family account. But when I do have money in there, I get to spend it on silly stuff like expensive razors and such!:)
The SRP Museum would like to extend to the forum a donation request. TSRPM desperately needs a western-style tamahagane steel in its Japan-America collection. Your help is greatly appreciated. Once the funds are ready, TSRPM staff will discuss appropriation and feasibility of the purchase and then act accordingly.
Thank you
- TSRPM Staff
PS Thanks for the idea, Craig!
I was wondering what goes through the mind while resurrecting lost nippo-centric steel making techniques to produce western-style goods?
Did it give them a chuckle: "There we have just made the largest improvement to straight razors in 200 years" (by making it from JP steel ;) )
Was it economics? The only way to keep going is having some money coming in.
Why make a western razor when the rediscovery is supposed to be Japanese?
Man...I had this long post written about the intertwined history of Japan and Germany, and the weird duality of feeling that Japan has about Europe, and all this great stuff about steel (trust me, it was GREAT), but I apparently closed my browser without posting it and now I'm just too tired to write it all out again.
Suffice to say: Probably all of the above, and then some.
People are finally bidding on it, I wonder how much it will go for in the end.
EDIT: 156,500 Yen
More exciting than the superbowl.
The timer extends if you bid under 5 minutes...
JimR I've sent you a pm. can you please let me know. I need your help. :aargh:
is the winner of this razor among us here???? if he is could it be possible to pm me with his home address and the best time for me to rob his house :D like when he is away on a long vacation because I don't have much experience with house robbing so I will need some time to be able to break in :roflmao. what the heck the vacation will be on me, just give me the address where to send you the tickets.
Another problem you may have is that the winner may live in Japan, so even if you do have the address, it is still a crapshoot as to finding the place. From what I can figure, the numbers of the adresses don't go sequentially down the street, like in the good ol USofA. Nope, they do it differently there.
See here.
I was trying to find an address one time in Japan, and I just simply couldn't.
It may be part of their homeland defense system or something.
I don't think Jim was the one that won that auction. He did said a few posts back that the he won't be bidding on this item. Anyway I have tried for 8 hours to register with yahoo japan auction site to bid on it and I was unable to do it. I only found this thread when the auction had 8 more hours to go. I saw all this strange letters and understood nothing from the japan yahoo website. I did use google translate but didn't helped to much. I believe that this auction was restricted to Japan residents only. I am not sure. :aargh: I was willing to pay even more then the this auction ended for so if anyone here will manage to locate in the future another auction or another store that sells this razor please PM me. I will make it worth the effort.
For yahoo japan auctions, you basically have to find a company to bid on it for you. They are pretty limited as far as where they will ship, and also payment methods allowed.
Here is a link that lists a few companies that you can bid thru
Bidding in Yahoo! Japan Auctions from Outside of Japan :.: Vertebrate Silence
Who knows... maybe the higher bidder will fail to pay and the razor will get relisted or something ... Like I said if anyone ever manage to track another razor like this on sale anywhere please PM me. I have a lot of razors and I am willing to give a gorgeous one away to the person that will find this one for me. I will let you choose one from my collection yourself.
BTW if anyone here speaks japanese or has a friend that speaks japanese please pm. I need someone to ask the seller of this razor a question and I don't know how to do it. Can any one here help me with this?
Gentlemen,
Just one look at those razors hails their beauty and quality. Lucky finds, indeed.
Regards,
Obie
