New Farid Japanese prototype

I would just like to share my new FARID razor with everyone here.
The blade is made of 440 c & Iv'e just had my first shave with it & i must say that for such a large blade it was suprisingly nimble, But I am going to have to spend more time one the hones as it was not really sharp enough & I put this mainly down to my own honeing ability ,So any advice form members how to get this blade up to speck would be much apreiciated . Is the blade hollow ground on one side only?By the pics it looks that way.If this is true then there should only be a bevel honed in the hollow side.The pics show a bevel on what appears to be the flat ground side.There should not be a separate bevel on this side as the whole side is the bevel.This will produce a cutting edge half as wide as a normal straight.Resulting in a sharper but less durable edge as the blade is finer at the cutting point.

In Farid's post, he said that it was ground all the way to the spine on one side and halfway to the spine on the other side. I don't think he said anything about the size of the grinding wheels though.

That's what one would think. But that's not really correct. I'll illustrate. Not a good illustration, but an illustration. :) What actually happens is that you hone at twice the angle on one side instead of half the angle on both sides. The actual angle (degree) of the bevel is the same for single or double bevel razors if the razors have a spine or honing contact point of the same thickness and the same distance from the edge of the blade.

In the Japanes style razor posted, it's an 8/8 with the hone contct at the halfway point on the one side of the razor. This means that at that point, it should have the spine thickness of a 4/8 razor, which would be somewhere around 1/8". If it does, it will have the same angle of bevel as a 4/8 standard hollow grind with a 1/8" thick spine.

440C needs to be cryo hardened or it will be too soft to maintain a good edge for long.

I am right now working on a different grind geometry to make the razor blades thinner.

I thought cryogenic tempering was more a marketing thing than an actual improvement.... learn something new every day, I guess.

It looks like it might be close to a standard bevel geometry now, but it's hard to tell for sure. I was trying to explain why it's a common misconception that single bevel blades (of all sorts) are 1/2 the angle on the bevel as standard double bevel blades.

All that matters is that a blade do the job well. :)

I am a knife maker and I am new to making razors, in the next few days it will be interesting to experiment with diffrent grinds.
I look forward to making more razors.

Thanks for the advice guys .After talking to Farid this is going back to be reground & heat treated to a higher rockwell.
He did a great job on my design considering this is the first razor he has made for a very long time. cheers Paul

Update:
All blades are now heat-treated and slightly scaled down in size, I am having lots of fun with these experiments, all in the name of passion for creativity and to be able to offer a high quality razor.

In brief: some steels (high alloy materials, chromium-moly alloys, not low alloy materials e.g. high carbon low other alloy stuff) will show a benefit from cryo treatments. If a low alloy steel is correctly treated, cryo is not necessary from a practical point of view.
