Gentlemen,
Has anyone heard of a razor called C-Mon? If so, what do you experts know about it and what is its history? Thanks.

They're still around, though the name was sold to J. Michaels in the 40's. The early razors are very good, the C-Mon's they're selling now aren't as good but are still serviceable. I bought a C-Mon "Cadillac" from Appleton Barber Supply a year or so ago.
C-Mon was an abbreviation for Carl Monkhouse. He was a manufacturer of barber supplies in Germany. Peter J. Michaels was his distributor in the USA. If I have my facts straight he moved his company to Ellicottville NY either right before WWII or immediately after.
His vintage razors and his strops are some of the best I have used. The current production is not of the same standard of quality from what I've heard. I have no firsthand experience with the new stuff.
It looks like you can still buy the newer Cadillac model from the Appleton Barber Supply that MParker mentioned.

i love my vintage C-MON HF even though it has a loosey pivot and is spike point (and I prefer round). easy to hone, great shave. elegant look. great freakin razor.
they sell c-mon razors at a barber supply shop near me but they sayed you had to be a certified barber to buy one so i could not get it.:argue:
very annoying. but in the end it worked out for the best because i got a better looking dovo that was properly honed so my first straight shave did not turn me away because of a dull blade. now that i have some skill straight shaving i need to go back there and see if i can get one now.
I haven't even seen one of the new ones, not even just to hone so I don't know yet...
As for the vintage ones they are for sure top line razors, whether they are Monkhouse or JPM stamped they all perform...
Walt, Glen, may I please? :D

I still own several of the vintage C-Mon's and love them. I have an old Stainless one that is mint and a killer shaver. I have honed a bunch of the new ones and would not buy one. The grind and quality of shave is not anywhere near as good as the old ones. They can be finicky to hone. They are adequate shavers in my book.
Can't figure out who is making them. Looks like they could be made by Dovo, but they don't behave like a Dovo.

That is just plain ignorant. That place is destined to go out of business. It is obvious they have absolutely no business sense what-so-ever.:aargh:
My dear John,
How right you are about some businesses that have no sense of "business."
For heaven sake, how many barbers do you think go out and buy C-Mon straight razors when fewer and fewer of them use real straights these days? So, yes, these people are bound to go out of business, because no company can afford to be that selective in its customer list.
In case anyone is interested in the C-Mon, the new models, according to the experts on this forum, Bowman Barber Supply carries them.

yeah it was kinda stupid because they would sell me the strops hones and everything else just not the razor.. it was a little rundown when i was there a year ago so i am sure it wont be long till they are out of business. the c-mon they sold was even $20 more than the ones on other sites.
I just got an older C-Mon out of a lot of old razors I received from a retired barber.
It's marked with the Monkhouse name on the backside and is marked C-Mon then under that HF and has a peened tang. I've sure never seen one like it.
I'll try to get a pic up tomorrow evening. Anybody seen one of these?
Jimmy I tried mine last night and man that is one of my best shavers. Very smooth and takes a nice edge! It has some spine wear but still measures 5/8th.

That is nice Gunner. I've never met a C-Mon that wasn't a heckuva shave. Here is my copy.
is there any razor you don't have Jimmy?
Very nice Jimmy! I'm pretty sure mine had the scales replaced and wish I had the ones like you have but hey as good as it shaves it's a keeper:-)
There are few razors that take an edge like that one and so easily.
