Going "pro", leaving the shavette.

I have been using the Dovo shavette for sometimes now and would like to advanced to a rea. straight razor.

The shavette, for some reason dont shave my chin god at all. Im almost certain its because of the flimsy razor blade, or my technique. :-) I feel I have hard to follow my face contours with it.

Some question.
- Is there a blade difference on ha 60-70 dollar s-razor and one over 150-200 dollar?
- How do I choose what blade that fits my face? Any guides?
- How often do they need to be sharpend? Im pretty new at this and just want to start of with a s-razor and not the other things. Is it sharp halv a year so I can shave?

1) The major difference is prices (for new razors) are the bells and whistles you want to purchase. They'll all pretty much shave about the same, but having a razor that has some flair is your personal decision. For the price points you mentioned, I would recommend a vintage model in good condition.

2) If you want to know which type of blade fits your face, buy lots and try them out...that's all I have to say about that.

3) You should only have to hone the blade a couple times a year, and touch-ups at that. You can get by with a strop and some chromium oxide for a LONG time.

If you have a $100 bucks to spend, I recommend the Dovo Special. Nice balance of bells and whistles, price, and performance.

Oddly enough, I like my cheapo shavette and derby half blades. I gotta be crazy cause it seems I shave easier with them. I don't nick the harder to shave rounded chin area, only the side of the chin. I have shave ready razors from some of the more senior members here, though I just seem to shave smoother with my shavette.

I enjoy acquiring straights for their beauty and do use them, but just not as frequently as my shavette.

I cant find the Dovo special, on ebay. I must get the straight razor from there, buying it local its way more expensive.

Any tips and hint what to get?

This is what I did. I ended up spending about as much as a new DOVO, but I got to try out 4 different point/grind/width combos. I recommend checking out the classifieds here, or if you are feeling adventurous (not to mention patient) I would try picking up a few (good) razors on the cheap over at the bay. You can then send them to be honed, meaning you could conceivably only spend around $25 for a nice, ready to go razor.

Some more questions.

- Do I need to get a strop right away? Or can it wait some time. I'm pretty new to this and don't like to spend a big amount of money at one time. I maybe don't like the real s-razor at all. Even that I likes the result of the shavette alot, even it was hard to follow the chin and contours.

- Thinking of ordering from Dovo Razors . They seems to be great. Shipping from us = Customs and so on = More expensive.

- What is the difference between the blade depths?
