Don't let the origin put you off. Ok, they have faults, but how cheap are they?! For the money, they seem great!
Which starter set?
I've not had a DA or GD, but I honestly think you're probably better off buying vintage. You can get a vintage, shave ready razor for $30 and up, depending on what you're interested in, and you can be certain that you're going to get a quality blade. Take a look on the classifieds.
a gd and a da are the same razors, i had a d a that i redid and modfied it i shaved with it for 30 straight days with strpoing every timeand i could not tell any diffrence in the shaves. so for the cost it is a great buy.

the bad about gold dollar is probably that theres a bit more work getting them ready for use then other new razors so if you buy shave ready that shouldnt be an issue
the great thing compared to buying wintage is that these are not unie old razors and easely replaceable
wich for me atleast allows me not to worry about damaging something old
vintage razors are to me atleast limited supply even if theres still a lot of them out there and every time one breaks theres one less on the total market
regardless of price id rather experiment with new production than anything old
cause new means theres no problem getting the exact same again exept money
For around $8 to $10 each it's hard to go wrong if they give a good shave and keep an edge as Ronnie has found. I bought one of each model to see what the differences were and simply to try them out myself. I have them now but have not had a chance to test them yet. I figure if I don't like them I have a few new blades to play with for making some really wild custom scales. But from what I read here they should give at least an adequate shave. We'll see.
Also I just found that Mr.Parko is wiling to sell them directly to us to avoid the compound Ebay/PayPal fees. I can't say I blame him. I got a PM from him last week but deleted it so I can't post his username now. I guess once he makes the minimum number of posts we'll be able to snag them here. It'll also allow us to ask him questions if he has good background info to share. I am curious about them so I hope he starts to post here more.
I agree with you holli4pirating.. If you are not a honer and you buy a Gold Dollar for say $15, you then have to ship it out to a honer. Depending on where you live it could cost up to $15 then you pay $15-20 for the honing and then up to $15 to ship it back. What you have then is a Chinese made, low quality razor that cost you from $40 to $65. How is that cheap? I have only payed over $60 for a razor once or twice. And what I got then was a shave ready razor made by a company with hundreds of years of experience. Most of my other razors I have bought shave ready for $25-35..Quote:

I agree with this too. And it is in my opinion the only reason to get one of these razors. But that is of course a matter of opinion. :)Quote:
