I received my first Wapi in the mail today (Telly Bruno). Of course, I'd read about the heavy scales, but needed to judge for myself.
Yep, they're pretty heavy. Saw one post about Dremel'd notches on the scales to counter the weight imbalance. Probably not the sort of project for me.
I am wondering how many folks manage to shave with the original scales or even like that extra weight.
I do. :D And really like them. Noticeably heavier at first and then it becomes business as usual...
I'm also interested in the answers we get from the woodwork on this one...

It does feel out of balance, but I dont mind it so much.
The unbalance definitely keeps me from using it every day, although when I first started I did use it every day.
I've had one of each, when comparing them side by side (shaving with each every other day) I really like the blade, I really dislike the steel scales. I'll pay to have a Wapi rescaled every time.

I had both, and it definately handles better post steel. I find good balance to be important in a razor. Get them rescaled!
I vowed to rescale the first time I used my Wapi. Now, it just seems natural for that razor. Maybe I'll rescale it some day. Maybe not.
I have always liked the stainless Wapi scales!
They do look good, I admit, but it performs far better with lighter scales. I have heard that holes can be drilled in them to balance out, but this has never been confirmed and I have never seen pictures of such modifications...
My Wapi is rescaled in Dovo bocote replacement scales with a brass wedge and flush pins at wedge side
Though, just on pure bad-ass-ness, the stainless steel is perfect for taking the razor to the gym, for many reasons. PLus it has the 'medical' vibe about it which creeps some, thrills others.
FINALLY have a good use for my autoclave. :nj
Why do you think stainless steel is preferable for the gym as opposed to plastic etc? I can understand not wishing to take ivory etc, but why specifically stainless, and what are the many reasons?
I do. I tend to leave razors as they come.
Because stainless is strong, durable, and rust-resistant. Plastic is too, but more easily breakable, unless you use one them awesome micarta's or g11's, but those aren't stock.
I don't know, when I think of taking a razor to the gym (disclaimer: which I've never done and don't see an opportunity to soon) I think of taking the roughest toughest gear I have.
Im the opposite, I take the razor which is the easiest to replace to the gym, same as I do when I travel, this being a boring Dovo best quality. Wapis are not so abundant as they once were.
I have the original scales on mine, but while it's awkward at first to shave it does become just business as usual. The adjustment for me was in the stropping, which took much more small muscle strength/control because of the weight. My right hand always feels a little "tired out" after a 50/50 lap strop. You just have to know what you're getting into when you do it.

I've tried them once with the original steel scales. Definitely doable, though it felt unusual.
I like the steel scales, they are very utilitarian.
