Thoughts about 7 day sets

I was watching a W&B 7 day set that ended tonight on the bay,Item number:360210769503 .I was thinking of going for it but decided against it. I have two 7 day sets and one 4 day set. The pair of seven dayers are vintage Solingen and are NOS. I've never used any of them. I have become their custodian. :) The 4 day set is in a 4 day case it is not a 7 day set short 3 razors. It is marked as being from Wales and I've honed and used all of those and they are all good shavers.

If I had gotten this set I would have probably honed and used them. But I thought about having 7 identical 6/8 round points and decided that I would be sort of bored with them. So the question is do any of you have and use 7 day sets ? If you don't have a set do you wish to have the 'right' set when it comes along ? Or do you feel that 7 identical razors, save for the day of the week etched on the spine, would be too much of a good thing ?

I'd like a 7-day set-Japanese. I was actually hoping I'd lose that W&B auction and by God I did! The reason being I didn't want to end up with two 7-day sets. The one I actually one was accidental. As it stands I only shave Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. If I vary it up to maximize the day of the week then problem solved. I don't think I'll get bored with 7-day set.

Other than something pretty to look at I don't think I would have much use for a 7 day set. My current set is a mismatch of W&B, Wapi, Oxford, Kron Punkt, Barlow and a partridge in a pear tree... :)

The way I look at it 7 day sets were a product of a bygone era (like straights har har). It was something the well heeled gentlemen or rich guy would aspire to. A nice matched set with ivory scales. To me there are too many nice razors out there. Seven of one type would be boring. Now if I was starting out and was a big spendur I would get a seven day set and that's it and use them for the rest of my life.

But like everything else you get what's important to you.

i wouldnt get a 7 day set unless i def planned on using them every day!! and i would take the mix match i have now and that would be for traveling

I would like to get a nice german seven day set. If you don't want yours. You could send it to me, and I will try them out. I promise I would send them back if need be.

Jimmy, I have a Tennis seven day set that I have not used. I work so many razors I have not used my normal rotation much either. I am getting sell crazy. I just put one of my rotation up on eBay to match another ERN I have up.

I shave once sometimes twice daily so I would get the use out of it if I owned one. But I plan on getting one just to pass along.

Here is a thread I started when I got them with photos. They are good shavers. The blades are stamped Wales but some thought they were made in Sheffield. The steel is of a high quality based on my honing and shaving results.

This is the thing. If I didn't have a heck of a lot of razors I would probably use the mint sets. They are so pretty and once they are used ..... I will probably use them eventually if I keep them. Selling on ebay can become as addictive as buying. :(

I bought the W&B set tonight on a bit of a whim. I really need to stop doing that, but I do plan to hone and use them. I'd appreciate any feedback on the set regarding the condition and price (albeit after the fact).

Question for the historians out there. I was wondering,what was the reasoning behind the 7 day set?

Was it for travelling? Or did you run through the set and drop them into the local barber for stropping and pick them up that night and run through them again? Just a bit of a status symbol? Maybe all of the above?

Well they are nice razors and will no doubt make excellent shavers. IMO you did very well as I thought they would go for well above what they did go for. If you ever want to get your money out of them you'll have no problem. I like the jimps and the 6/8 blades and the 'improved tang' is cool. I like shaving with round points but they don't turn me on visually.

Had I been the winner of that set I would give Robert Williams (Papa Bull) a shout and ask him if he had any more of those $29.00 acrylic replacement scales he made. I bought a white faux pearl and a black pearlized set and they went on a couple of 6/8 blades like they were made for them.

I like to mix up the razors I use, so I think I'd get bored with a 7 day set. I like to change each day, its part of the fun..!

Kind of off topic, but rather than buying and using a 7 day set I think it would be great to have a 7 razor box made and assemble your own, complete with after market day of the week engravings. I think it was Max who rescaled a complete 7 day set in wild and crazy colors and designs a while back, and I'm sure all were great. Sure that's just the scales and they don't (really) affect the shave, but at least it adds a little variety.

I myself wouldn't mind having a Monday/Wednesday/Friday set...

Since the first day i joined SRP i knew that i wanted a seven days set but i also knew that it would get borring with the same razors.

thats why i bought 7 different razors. i will scale them all the same..and make them a little box.

At this point in my shaving career I like diversity. Different size, different styles. So no 7-day sets for me.

I used to want a 7 day set but then I settled for different razor brands in case I got bored.That's how it was supposed to go but now I have two Geneva cutlery co.6/8ths and two 7/8ths Flics.Oh well, I'll just have to start all over again:D. I don't think a seven day set of Genco or Flic would bore me.

Jimmy, I have a pristine set of Gem cutlery 5/8 roundpoints, the box is battered but the razors look like new. In the 3-4 years I have had them I have put two of them to the barbers hone(thurs, sunday) they looked so good and shaved so good I think I may have been the only one to ever use them. I keep them cleaned and oiled and no longer use them, they are my babies and daddy is very proud!

I have a seven day set, but I never use it. I got it primarily for the nostalgia.

I would love a 7 day set, but I do love the mismatched handful of razors I do have!

My grandfather collects antiques and goes to fairs quite often. About a month ago he bought me a seven day set of 6.5/8 Rodgers in ivory, round point hollow grounds. Great condition apart from some having a little devil's spit but two of them are not part of the original set and are smaller 5/8s.

I have not yet honed them, but soon will as they look like they will be superb. The quality of them is awesome and even the box is beautiful, which looks to be spalted or black and white ebony.

I have a Rodgers wedge, also in ivory so it will be interesting to see how it compares to a similarly sized Rodgers hollow grind.

oh yeah, this post is entitled 'thoughts about 7 day sets.'

My thoughts in general are yes they are great, especially the vintage heirlooms and modern day customs that Thiers Issard offer for example, however had I not been given one I doubt I would ever purchase a set. Perhaps if a seven day set was non identical and offered different grinds/points/sizes, but then it wouldn't be a set, rather a collection.

Generally I like variety and enjoy giving thought and choosing which razor I will use for my shave. There may be consistency between the grind I will select and the number of days growth I have accumulated.

In conclusion I believe that a seven day set can be desirable, but not preferable to having 7 different razors of different steel, grind etc; and would complement a rotation of other razors.

Thats my analogy at least. Some people like consistency. In terms of shaving I like diversity.

I have heard that some 7 day sets include smaller blades for Saturday and Sunday. Could that be the case with yours?

I have a 7 day set. I am SOOOO board with shaving with the same razor (an exact copy of yesterday's) every morning! All of the razors have the day of the week etched in the spine. It was a nice thought, but I am really thinking about picking up 6 other razors. (I have one razor in addition to the 7 day set). I think the mix and match system will really work here.

Come to think of it, I don't need 6 more, just 5.... I don't shave on Saturdays.

I would like a 7 day set. There is a set of wilkinsons in a antique store round here, or there was. They're not in very good condition and he want's too much money. They are still extremely tempting.

There is something very elegant about 7 day sets IMO. Though I think it would get boring to only have a 7 day set.

No mine are all same size. I have yet to shave with them but will eventually. They need a little work.
