So guys what is the Holly Grail of Straight Razors?
The one you would sell off all for?
The one you would stay a wake at night waiting for the auction to close?
The razor that would make you weak in the knees when found in the Antique mall?

For me I've alrady got whatever my obscure object of desire was at the time. Puma duck, Wonderedge, dubl duck Lifetime, W&B for barbers, Fillys, Livi Takada dam.... now I just pick up whatever appeals to me at the time. There are a lot of awfully nice razors out there that are by obscure makers that can be had at a reasonable price.
I've tried a lot of rare and wonderful razors in the past, but one I've never tried (or am ever likely to :( ) is a Tamahagane Iwasaki western straight like JimR's. :)
Realistically, maybe I'd like to buy another Livi one day, with a Silvano damascus blade.
As recommended by J. MacLeod: Chronik "First Class" 6/8 - Straight Razor Place Wiki.
I really think that the "Holy Grail" of razors is that razor or razors which you find for yourself that gives you what you consider the ultimate shaves. There are a bunch that fit that bill for me.

Have fun,
Lynn
mmm, I don't think I would have been happy until I owned a wilkinson. So far, I haven't been driven to buy or find any other particular razor but that one, and I got lucky.
There can only be one. THIS ONE. :)
The holly grail must be this one.

As for the Holy Grail....
The ultra-rare Grübelsdotter "Bleistiftskügelscreibe". It was forged in secret forge of Monace, which located exactly in the middle of Sheffield-Solingen-Eskiltuna Triangle, as reported by Plato. It was forged in 1888 from alloy found from the site of a meteorite crash to Soviet Union earlier that year. No-one knows who the smith was, but the legend tells that he wound up in Polish mental asylum chanting "it doesn't need stropping" all over and over again. He never did manage to grow his beard back after that and in 2007, he still was as BBS as when he was committed.
Unfortunately 8 of these blades we melted down to make the Eiffel tower, but I was luckily able to get a hold of the last one and it is still so sharp you'll nick yourself just looking at it. The rest 7 of them are in a 7-day set, held by a homeless man in Australia, that shaves sheep for fun.
But We're not planning to sell them, even for $20, so you can quite worrying about it and buy just what feels good to you.
To be serious for a moment, what Lynn just said has been said time and again in the other threads to aimed to find "the best razor of all time". It's individual. It's whatever floats your boat. It's whatever I choose when I shamble off for a shave.
Anyways, welcome to SRP mate. I hope you find your holy grail of razors soon. Many happy shavings =D
I consider all my razors to be the Holy Grail !!!:nj
Gold Dollar! Some day when my finances are better.:rofl2:
Really i would love a custom. But there not rare so i dont know if that applies.
Lynn's description for the holy grail sounds pretty good to me, but that also means I need more experience to know what the holy grail is for me.
Now if you are asking what is the holy grail of my RAD I would say that changes. It was a C-MON HF, I never cared for razors with plastic scales but the first time I saw a picture of that razor I swear there was lights and music and such in my head. In fact it was these pictures here...

I'm now restoring one of those so my RAD needs a new Holy Grail to quest for, I think maybe an Otto Deutches or an 8/8 W&B will be my next quest.
I'm really hunting for a few razors. One is a nice Mappin, another is a fencing foils Greaves, and another is something over 9/8. I'd also quite like a nice SatinWedge. That's all I can think of at the moment that I really want.

Attachment 34405I like what Lynn said, Ive got a Harris-Goar, made in KC and sold by H-G in their catologs from way back. Its a 5/8 roundpoint, extra hollow ground etched on the obverse and We sell Elgin watches on Credit on the reverse. Its a great shaver, made and marketed here in the hometown and has a little rarity and history to it. What could be better!
A Robert Williams custom made to my specs.A couple others, but I don't want to duplicate what others have said.(or put anyone on point to look for what I want)
I've got your holy grail . Right here!

Just a few of my favorites .:)
As much as I agree with Lynn, there is one razor i really want that is my 'Holy Grail,' which i can not find for sale anywhere.
An ivory clad tang Rodgers with ivory scales. There is one listed within our database.
In fact, if anyone would be willing to sell it to me, please PM me. If not I remain deep within my quest to source and acquire this razor.
Dave5255, that last razor - what is it? Thats a cool point I havent seen before
Its all relative. If you have a grail once you get it it won't be anymore and it will be replaced by another grail.
I would rather just say a razor you really really want. I guess for me it would be a bertrum Hen and Rooster razor and a Bresnick Napoleon. I really don't expect to ever get either.
From an emotional attachment point of view, my Red Point is the holy grail. It is the only razor of the dozens I have purchased that I have kept and it was my first, gifted to me by my good friend Greg and honed to perfection by Max. I can honestly say that no matter how many razors I get I will never want to rid myself of this one.
I agree with the comments above. Not to be too coarse about it (and no pun intended), but I think these old razors are like girls -- every new one you see makes you fall in love or lust for a little while.
But what about this for a Holy Grail -- how about a straight razor that was owned by some historic person and used by that person for a significant part of his life. I mean, wouldn't you be interested in seeing Thomas Jefferson's straight razor? How about Stalin's? How about John Wayne's? To me, any one of these razors would be kind of like the Holy Grail, not so much because of the maker but because of the owner.
I'd like to change my answer a bit, an Otto Deutches or W&B are desired acquisitions, if they were a holy grail I would be willing to spend enough to get one now. In fact the W&B is a desired acquisition for restore and rescale, I don't want to buy one shave ready.
No, I think my holy grail would be one of two razors. Either the one razor that would make all of you hate me for finding it first (cause I'm a jerk like that). Or this razor...
http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...-bartmann.html
and yes, I hate the owner of that razor for finding it first :)
It seems like every razor I get just ends up making me want another. For awhile it was a Zowada custom, but I lost my lust for that. But a Limited Edition TI Thiers Hammered would be nice. Even found one, but the euro exchange rate has them at 600 bucks. Just cant justify it!
I never expected to see one of these for sale, but here it is:
IWASAKI Western Style Razor 75mm Tamahagane Blade
For me it would be a Mappin Lancet point. I have been wanting one for quite some time now. I have a couple of Sheffields but do not consider myself a collecter. However, the lancet is one I really would like to own.
Even if I could get one that need restoration that would be ok as long as the damage is not too bad.
It would be this and I will get it soon.
I was thinking about getting that razor also. There is one up for auction on eBay or I can get it new from Vintage Blades. I guess if I lose the auction that will be the next place I go.
Let me know how the shave is on that.
