I want a T I razor. what can you guys tell me about Thiers Issard and how they shave? I am hoping to get my hands on a ram's horn T I. I am not eligible to post an ad on buy/trade I guess I am too new in the club? I have a mint condition DD Goldedge in it's case.
Trying to set up a trade here is the wrong way to go about that. I've never owned a TI, so I can't say anything about them firsthand. I could say what I've read, but I'm sure actual owners will chime in soon enough. TI's are too expensive for me to justify buying...
I invite suggestions on how to go about a trade. I have no idea, I am a newbie!
The only place for it is in the classifieds. If you do not yet have access, you can either wait till you meet the requirements or PM a mod and ask for an exception.

I owned a Thiers-Issard for a couple of years (the only razor I ever bought new, I believe) and I only used it a handful of times before I sold it to someone from the board. I hope whoever has it now is enjoying it.
It just wasn't the razor for me, I don't think. This particular one, anyway. It was a 7/8 and the biggest razor I've owned. That definitely didn't fit, comfort-wise. Seeing as how I've almost always shaved with a 5/8 or 6/8, I probably should't have strayed when I was shopping the TI. I realized after I got it that I have a real fondness for the antique qualities of a lot of my other razors. That new blade, as beautiful as it was, just didn't have much of a soul to it. Anybody can open their checkbook and pay for a shiny new razor, but I think it's a lot more special to hunt down a razor that's just as shiny, but also a hundred years old! Or, to recognize the potential in a tarnished blade and then lovingly restore it to its former glory.
I'm rambling.
If I still had the TI, I'd have traded you for that Dubl Duck, no problem. We'll leave it at that. :)

Yes, a mod is a moderator. You can see which mods are online in the list of currently active members on the main forum page (Straight Razor Place Forums - Powered by vBulletin). Just scroll down till you see all the names; mods are in blue (light and dark). Click one, go to contact, and send a private message.
As for posting a trade, those go in the WTB/WTT trade section of the classifieds. See my post above.
You'll find plenty of posts here concerned with the quality control at TI and their fit and finish, but few, if any, stating they were not good shavers. All you'll find are posts similar to the one above from Blade Wielder saying the razor was not their cup of tea. It's all down to personal preference. The only way to know if you'll like them is to buy one and try it. Also, I would keep the DD. If you sell/trade it, sooner or later you'll probably regret it. :)
I'm not convinced that old is best. Old can be good, very good, excellent even. But that vintage is superlative and the quality of the old blade being immeasurably better than those of current manufacture is, to me, wishful thinking. The fit and finish of the old razors may be better than the current razors, but modern steel making and heat treatment is probably better than that of the days of yore. The real "edge" of the vintage blade is that generally they can be had at cheaper prices than new razors.
I don't think you'll be disappointed with the shaving characteristics of a new TI, if it is honed well. That said, sell your DD only if you are pushed into a corner as they have their well earned charm.

Well, I can almost say that. I purchased a TI 5/8" Special Coiffure from the Knife Center, or at least I thought I did. What arrived in a TI box is a 6/8" razor with the 1937 Special Coiffure etching on the blade, but a Jaguar on the tang. I was at first dismayed, but decided, after determining that Le Grelot made Jaguar razors, to keep it. I'm glad I did as this blade is outstanding and I will never part with it. Here is a pic. DONT TRADE THAT DUCK! They are easily some of the smoothest, most consistent blades out there. I don't think they are worth $250 or that they are the ABSOLUTE best, but if you already have one I would hang on to it as they really are excellent shavers.
FWIW, I have a TI 6/8 "1937 Special Coiffure" as my travel razor. I bought it for small coin and thought that were it to get lost or damaged I wouldn't be out much. It shaves like a dream and I'm wondering if I shouldn't replace it in the Dopp kit with something more expensive and less dear. Among the few razors I have is another 6/8 TI, this one with blond horn handles I got from Lehman's in Ohio. This is another razor that shaves very well (I even honed it myself).
TI is just fine.

Not sure if this helps, but I have a Thiers "Le Grelot" and it is an excellent, dream shaver. It came with a scary sharp edge from Classic Shaving, and with careful stropping, it just seems to stay sharp as hell. (I've used it consistently for about 4 months, and no sign of dulling yet.) The 3/4 hollow grind is easy to use and has great feedback while shaving. It was kind of expensive ($200) but is more than worth the money, in my view.
Anyway, because the blade is from Le Grelot, I'm not sure if this is exactly on point, but if you have a chance to purchase one, I would not pass it up.
I bought an SRP TI off the classifieds here, I have to say I enjoy using it. I found it a lot daintier than my old Kropp (which feels a bit numb to use).
TBH it's the only razor I use at the minute though saying that I have just honed up my old J.M.Smith from York razor and will be giving that a go next time. After that I'll be having a go with a George Butler Trinity Works (Keen) Sheffield jobbie so will post again later to see if my TI is still my favourite (odds on it will be)
If you have a mint Goldedge keep that its a better razor than a stock TI anyway.
