Width of a spine
Is the width of the spine pretty consistent across brands for a given blade size or does it tend to vary by maker? I recently got a 6/8 Le Grelot 3/4 to full hollow ground that looks significantly bigger than the 11/16 REX 1/2 hollow. The spine of the Le Grelot is 37mm. The spine of the REX is 22mm. I really like the weight of the Le Grelot and the REX not so much. I've been eying a 5/8 TI, but I'm not sure if it would be similar in weight to the REX since tehy are both roughly 5/8 blades or if TIs run a little heftier and the weight would be closer to the 6/8 Le Grelot.
Can someone with a little more experience than I help me out?
Thanks.

do you have any pictures of what you are talking about? I am having a hard time understanding your question, and more specifically determining which part of the razor you are talking about.
are you actually measuring the spine thickness, if so 37 -22 mm would be WAY too big unless you have a 4 or 5" wide blade or so. Maybe you mean 3.7mm and 2.2mm? (still doesn't seem quite right)

+1. Those measurements don't look right to me either.
Anyway, here are dozens of spine thickness versus blade width measurements:

Doh! Not only did I slip a decimal place, I misread my measurement. The REX spine is 4.6mm and the Le Grelot is 6.1mm, but actually, that's just a reference. What I'm really wondering is the general heft/weight of the razor. For a given blade size and grind, are the other general specs of the razor (e.g. weight, spine thickness, etc.) relatively consistent across brands?

spine thickness is generally between 1/3 and 1/4 of blade width across the board

It may have been answered, but Im going to ask anyways. Is it critical for the stock size to be .250" or can I get away with .1875" (3/16). Let me know. I plan on making one (or 2 or 3) for the first time and need some info. Thanks

With a spine at 3/16 I think the widest you could go would be about 6/8. That is going with 4:1 ratio. Any bigger and the angle of the bevel might be to acute. I have never made a razor, but I was going off the measurements of vintage razors that vary from 3.5:1 to 4:1. Maybe someone that makes razors can chime in with more info.

Good to know. Any advice or resources for someone who has never made one? I know and understand the theory, but haven't put it into practice.

Ok we have two threads developing here, one of which is 4.5 years old, this question would also be better placed in the workshop subforum. As far as i am aware, the spine thickness needs to relate to the blade width (at the point where the spine touches the hone, not the overall width), and should give a bevel angle of around 18 degrees.
JD, there are loads of threads about making razors in that area too.
