How about this rw

hey all,

has anyone tried the shavingshop RW ?

how about the full hollow ? how does the full hollow perform in comparison with other RW grinds? im thinking about the shave...

does anyone have any experience with these? are they worth the $ ? prices can be seen on shavingshop.

is the $ worth it or will i be better of for the same $ ordering a custom directly from robert + the waiting time of course.

please give some input and opinions if you have some.

I own several of RW blades from a full hollow to a wedge. They are all great shavers in there own right. Only you can decide what grind works for you. Another way to go is to buy a used RW custom from the classified forums. I hope this helps?

The main thing, for me, in getting a RW is the quality of the blade. He is a master at the making of steel. I personally have a couple of high carbon steel razors from him and they take and hold an edge that is the best I have, and I have some nice razors. I wanted a Robert Williams for months before I ordered one and they never came up for sale but now the come out of the woodwork, go figure. If you can get one that meets you specifications get it. For instance I prefer 6/8 or 13/16,1/4 grind, HCS, French or Spanish point. The price he asks for razors is almost half what some of the other guys ask and from what I have experienced first hand his blades are awesome!

I am just a boring guy. I would guess that I have bought and sold 30 razors in search of the "Holy Grail" of razors. RW's are very close. When I get a razor that is able to shave me like his razors do it is hard to go to another. I have been shaving over 2 years and honing steel of one kind or another for 3 decades. When I got one of his razors I was intimidated at first. I then proceeded to "touch up" the razors that I got. I now have a word of warning! I am sure that the keenness the edge took would be considered by a lot of people to be to sharp. I know that I had to readjust my shaving techniques. Don't scythe with it unless you have a ton of experience and slow the hell down. ;) I would think that some of the new HCS razors that TI is making have the ability to take this kind of edge, I do not know, but be forewarned.

Honing one of his razors might also present a challenge to a new guy. The steel is very hard and because of that it may present a few challenges that come with said steel.

You can't go wrong either ordering from John at the shaving shop or from Robert. The question is do you want it now or are you patient ? I won't say how many of RW's razors I have but more than a few and they are all superb AFAIC.

well i think that considering that im a newb... and didnt really do my own honing yet... i think im gonna experiment a little with different grinds and blade sizes si i can find out what tickles my tummy best and then maybe pull the trigger on the big guns :)

how does that sound ? :)

I'd say that's a good idea. When you've decided what you like, I'm sure that Robert will sort you out to a tee.

RW full hollow razors are great. They deliver an incredible and comfortable plus shave. If you get the chance to try one , you will not be disappointed.

RW razors are one of the best, if not the best that are currently made by a skilled artisan. They are big time premium straights with prices to match, but reasonable in my mind.

If you order a custom new one, I think it will be 6 - 12 months.
