It happens when you go to prison... You sit in your cell and rot.
Or... you could be right that it's celluloid rot... ;)
My understanding of celluloid rot is when the chemical structure of the celluloid begins to break down and the chemical vapor begins to eat into the blade.

Celluloid rot it is.
These seem to be two (2) types of celluloid:
1) Cellulose acetates
2) Cellulose nitrates
When cellulose acetate decomposes, it give off acetic acid (vinegary smell). When cellulose nitrate decomposes, it give off nitric acid, which is mighty corrosive to most steels :(
