Would this be a decent starter razor....

Hello all,

I've been itching to start straight shaving (still remember the time when my barber many many many a moon ago would use one for the fine trims). So I went to one of the local antique shops and spotted this:

A #35 - Beau Brummel (picture attached)

Does it look like it is in decent condition? (i'm going to try and get better pics tomorrow). Would also send it to Dan (floppyshoes?) for honing etc. (if he'd be gracious enough to accept it).

Any suggestions for approx age too would be awesome (it was located in a military display case if that helps?)

Welcome to SRP. Yes that is a good 'un. Brummels are real good IME and are well thought of AFAIK by anyone who has one or more. Floppy shoes is a good man to send it to as well. Not sure on the age of the razor. You've probably already been around the site but just in case you haven't seen it you can check out the SRP Wiki beginner's guide here. :beer1:

Are you kidding ? The bluing on the tang looks great ! I don't think the razor has even been used . Looks like you got a helluva good deal .

Ok I went and bought it. Here are some pics. I've shrunken most pics but left some of the important ones full sized - crops...if they're too large I can resize them - or if for some oddball reason someone wants fullsized ones or other shots I can post them for download off of one of my domains...

How bad is the nick on the blade? There's only one or two small dings and scratches on the handle/(scales?) The pic with the blade contact label is the spot where the blade will contact the handle when closing if not diverted...the case BTW i don't think belongs to the razor - but they threw it in anyhow.

I had a Brummel with near identical scales and loved it. Mine was a wedge grind and did not have a third pin, but otherwise quite similar.

There are a few tricks for getting the blade to center properly in the scales (check the wiki) and that nick does not look like a problem at all. Great find.

Congrats ! Scales may be a tad warped if the blade is touching but looks quite serviceable.
