I have put WD 40 on the blade of my razors as I leave them out open. This is how I store them. I have found that when I wipe the WD40 off, a slight smudge may appear. This comes off easily with maas but I wondered if I should be using another oil to coat the steel and whether this is normal. Has anyone else experienced this?

You can get it at any store that sells personal lubricants ( sex lube ) just look for the ingredient dimethicone. It is cheap , less than a dollar an ounce which will last a very long time. Just use a couple of drops. I dont know where you can get it in Taiwan ?

Mineral oil is another option. It's cheap, readily available, and works great for protecting razors. I use it differently from most who simply apply it by wiping in onto the razor. I dilute it to a 0.5% (1:200) solution in isopropyl alcohol and dip the razor in that solution. The alcohol dissipates residual water as it evaporates and the oil remains in a thin coat to protect the blade.

Any automotive shop will have silicone - but camelia oil is proven and shouldn't be too had to find in taiwan (guess). A gun cloth like a 'Tuf Cloth' (brand name) is also a good way to go.
WD-40 is essentially a light mineral oil and would be no mor likely to stain than any other light mineral oil. Polydimethylsiloxane (aka dimethicone) is actually hydroscopic (attracts water) and would not work as a protective agent for steels.
thats what i thought... i wonder why wd40 is staining my razors. I can get it off easily enough with maas but i dont understand why this is happening. any clues? anyone use olive oil?
I hear baby oil works also. Anyone heard of this being used?
I believe baby oil is simply mineral oil with some fragrant additives.
My continued concern with WD40 is that it has additives that may not be good for you. The WD40 MSDS lists the following.
Skin Contact: Prolonged and/or repeated contact may produce mild irritation and defatting with possible dermatitis.
Eye Contact: Contact may be irritating to eyes. May cause redness and tearing.
Medical Conditions Aggravated by Exposure: Preexisting eye, skin and respiratory conditions may be aggravated by exposure.
WD40 leaves a shallac like coating on stuff, I used to get ALOT of older guns in that where coated in the junk for years. Was a pain to remove, not something I would put on a razor.

I don't think tuf-glide alone will prevent corrosion. I've put a few layers on a blade, but that's to get inside the scales at the pivot pin and stuff. Sure, I put the coat all over the tail, shank, jimps, etc. but I don't depend on it for total protection. It's just the icing on the anti-corrosion cake. Mineral oil, plain and simple.
What do we think of clove oil (or at least I think that is what it is), I got some yesterday and was told this is the stuff the Japanese have been putting on their swords for centuries... Any other experiences with this?
I use Ballistol, this is gun oil, it also has light cleaning effect.

Years back, I dropped the locks on a Perazzi shotgun I still own and had used WD-40 on on an emergency basis. I did not like what I saw! Every part of the trigger group had to be dismantled and cleaned due to a reddish brown coating. Now, on a Perazzi, that's not a major job, but it still shocked me, but I learned from it..
WD-40 was not designed as a lubricant, preservative or rust preventer.. I believe it was designed to displace water, and i do not believe it does a good job of that!

Now I do admit to a rather strange ritual before putting a WD-40 coated razor on my face for shaving,,, I WIPE IT OFF, then strop, I then also rinse the razor in hot water before shaving with it, I like them warm... If you guys actually take the time to read the tests that have been done about rust prevention that are easily found by Google you will find IIRC 2-3 products that score better than WD-40 in the tests, they are gun oils...
BTW mixing any oil with dust, dirt, and powder blow back, inside of a firearms working parts will gum it up...This is why no wet lube is reccomended for that application...
I have absolutely no clue as to why the WD-40 is staining the op's razor, but my guess, is it has nothing to do with the product, who knows though, without doing some tests, that is all just guessing...or WAG actually...
Now also, I never ever "Spray" a razor, I spray a piece of TP and gently wipe the razors steel...
PS just the first test I found, there are many many more make sure to note the part about not using it inside of gun parts...

What works for me in Mineral Oil...or baby oil. You can get it at any pharmacy or Target, etc...There's even thicker versions of it with gel inside...but I use baby oil and works just fine.
When I got my 5/8" Respecto #77 a few months back, it was coated with WD40 and left some "stains" on the blade. it took a couple of rounds with some MAAS to polish them off. Now, I use mineral oil...no fuss, no stain, clean.
When it comes to silicone, be careful...There are many kinds. You want silicone oil, but even this is not as effective at repelling water (i.e., hydrophobic) as MO.
