Griffon XX

I am new to the forum and would first of all like to thank everyone involved with putting forth the effort to maintain the site and to say how much I appreciate all the information available.
I have a question concerning a razor I have just purchased. It is a Griffon XX with black bakelite scales. The blade has an inscription:
"Hollow Griffon Ground"
XX
One side of the tang has GriffonXX and the no. 83. The other side reads Griffon Cutlery Works.
My question is - Is this razor made in Germany even though it is not stated or is it made in the U.S.?:confused:

Most likely, US. If there isn't Solingen or Germany on the tang.

I can't answer that specifically but I can say that there are quite a few. I scored one made in Germany with Sheffield steel and have noticed them on ebay ever since. All that I have seen are mostly German but not Sheffield steel Seems to be a wide variety of models IIRC. Carbo magnetic and others.

I don't know specifically about your razor either, but the Griffon Cutlery works were originally located in New York but they later opened a secondary factory in Germany.

I can't say. I don't have full Griffons catalog.
The most popular and known is the Carbo Magnetic Razor.

That is an interesting ad. No honing ? Also the full hollow at $2.50 while the "double concave" went for $3.00 and was for heavy beards. :) Probably the more pricey version was a 1/4 hollow but maybe they were both the same. What they didn't tell the buyer was that one would last a lifetime but it comes with RAD and you're going to end up with hundreds of them. :D

While we are Talking about Griffon's I have another Question I could not the Razor last night or I would have asked any way this is a Griffon XX # 79 it must be a US blade because it doesn't have Germany on it anywhere on the Blade it says DAMASCUS SILVER STEEL. OK I think I know what Damascus is it's either 2 types of steels forged together or the Reigon of Damascus . I'm just not sure what Silver Steel is I've seen it on Razors but I don't know what it is. Ok so is this Razor Silver Steel And some kind of other steel making it the 2 steels forged together DAMASCUS or maybe I just really confussed so can you please just help me. I have been gifted this Griffon XX #17 razor by my neighbor. This thing loks very impressive and has a very hefty tang to it. I measured it at around 13/16". It says "ReCarbonized Steel" on one side and has "Ground in Germany" on the other side on the tang. The blade looks really nice, very little to no hone wear. It needs a bit of edge work and a good honing, maybe a touch of polish, but otherwise a perfect blade. Scales appear to be Bakelite, but not sure.

Wondering about more detail on this razor and also wondering where I can have it honed and be brought back to shave ready condition. I want to try shaving with it. I have not been using a straight regularly, so I am still very much a journeyman in SR shaving, but this blade is inspiring to me. I love the way it looks and feels.
