    Default Buying an AMA/Gotta Dovo

    Hi everyone,

I am thinking about buying my first straight razor. I was going to go with the Dovo Best Quality 5/8, but looking around the net I've found a few first-hand AMA and Gotta razors which claim to be Dovo as well, perhaps having Dovo blades. They seem to be about ten pounds cheaper, but I can't find much information about either of the companies.

Does anyone know if these would be a good investment vs. the standard Dovo?

    many thanks

    Leo

Can you link to the razors in question? I have never head of AMA, but I do know of and love Kama. Gotta's are also great sharvers, but they and Kama's are vintage blades - they are not currently in production.

Unfortunately the pictures aren't great. Cheers

New production razors are a gamble if they are an unfamiliar brand or unfamiliar production of an old brand. Best bet would be to wait for someone to vouch for them. There are some inexpensive "new production" razors out there that shave well but that has been rare so far.

    Thanks for you input.

So am I correct in assuming that those razors are not simply rebranded Dovos, they are made differently, just with Dovo blades?

    Thanks

Dovo does make blades for others, but do you know if this is one of the others they sell to? I just recently bought an Edwin Jagger cutthroat razor which is made by Dovo. How do I know that Dovo made it, I not only see the marks of both Edwin Jagger and Dovo on the blade, but I trust the seller Edwin Jagger. Unfortunately, manufacturing has gotten to the point where the buyer must be aware!
